Go camping on the Francis Marion National Forest

The Charleston hiking and Climbing Club is going to do a car camping trip and you all are invited.
http://www.meetup.com/charlestonhc/events/102386012/

We are going to do another overnight trip at Halfway Creek Trail Camp. This is a short walk in to the site of about 200 yards to the farthest back site. This is a large campsite with a small fire pit. There are no bathrooms or trash service at this site. This is a water hand pump, but the water doesn't taste very good. Update water pump is broken and you need to bring your own water. I would recommend bringing all your own water. We will have a campfire and be up late drinking. This will be a fun event.

I will be coming from work and will not arrive until about 5pm. I will post my phone number the night before and you can call me if you get lost finding the site. I need an event host to meet people and you can arrive at any time.

I will try to get us some fire wood and there are small piece of wood around. I am planning to cook on the campfire with some type of foil dinner and if any wants to learn more about foil dinners, I am willing to teach. I am going to do either stuffed peppers or hamburger with veggies and pototoes.

Alcohol is allowed at this site, therefore no kids are allowed on this trip without first contacting Randy.

Dogs are allowed on this camping trip, please bring a leash as forest service requires dogs to be on leash.

Driving directions from Mount Pleasant by highway 17:

Head north along highway 17 and pass Sewee Visitor center. Look for a Wambaw Cycle Trail sign and the next road will be steed creek road. Take a left on Steed Creek Road and head until you get to Halfway Creek Road, which is the next major road. Take a left and go down 1/4 mile and it is the first dirt road on left. Park in the center grass area.

Driving directions from Mount Pleasant by highway 41:

Head north along highway 41 and go over the bridge for Wando River. Pass the turn off for south Clements Ferry Road. The next road has a flashing light and turn right this is Halfway Creek Road. You will follow this road for about 15 minutes. You will go thru a 35 mph zone and once you go back up to 55 mph, start looking for a brown fire sign with small picture of smokey bear on it. Once you pass that sign, the next road on right hand side is the trailhead. there is no trailhead sign on this road. But if you go to the stop sign, you have gone 1/4 mile to far. If you see the trail crossing signs, it is about 1.5 miles still to go.

Driving directions from using I526:

Take north Clements Ferry Road exit and when you see a sign for north highway 41 take a left there. When you get to the stop sign, go across highway 41 and you are now on Halfway Creek Road. Follow directions for using highway 41.

With cool weather, we only had 2 people show up from 4 different clubs and last year we had 30 people in February. I am thinking about doing this trip again in April. I still had a great time and it was nice to just hang around the campfire.

This seems fun! And car camping trip- whats that? Does that mean we can have our cars right on the campsite and sleep in them? I have a rav4 often thought about flipping the seats down and throwing a blowup mattress in the back.
