IE Daily Bulletin review ~

The cuisine itself is focused on grilled meats, a staple of the Pampas, and the Italian influence is evident in a selection of assorted pastas and pizzas from which to choose. One of the more unusual dishes is matambre y rusas. This is a rolled, stuffed beef that is served cold along with the classic all-purpose chimi churi sauce, comprised of chopped Italian parsley, garlic, olive oil, dried red pepper flakes and a touch of vinegar. It has a bit of a bite and goes wonderfully well with various meat dishes. The matambre is filled with hard boiled eggs, carrots, parsley, garlic and bread crumbs. The tender beef comes with an excellent potato salad similar to the one my mother used to make - not overly mayonnaised, with pieces of cubed potato.

Empanadas, meat- or vegetable-filled baked pastries, are another Argentine staple. Golden brown and flaky, they are available with chicken, beef, spinach with a touch of nutmeg and lemon juice, or ham and cheese, the ultimate finger food.

The pizzas are uniformly excellent. The dough for the delectable crust is made by an Argentine baking company in Los Angeles. Per Clara, the "especial" version is the most authentic of the versions they offer, containing tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, sliced and marinated red bell peppers, green olives and a sprinkling of oregano with thin slices of ham layered on top. The olive oil-infused crust is firm yet soft in the interior. Frankly, it's difficult to stop eating.

The pasta verde (pesto Tango Baires) is their version of pasta al pesto, with less garlic than you see in most Italian versions. Spinach and basil are blended with a creamy cheese-infused sauce. For $3.75 you can add four plump (16-20 count per lb.) shrimp that have a pleasant snap when you bite into them. This was a dish that I couldn't get enough of. Use the endless supply of crusty Italian bread to sop up every last drop of the sauce!

The final entree item is the justly famous parillada, an Argentine BBQ for 2 comprised of a selection of various grilled meats served on a mini grill incorporating garlic sausage, morcilla (blood sausage), sweet breads (thymus gland, a rather fatty and chewy rendition), grilled chicken, Angus skirt steak filet, beef short ribs, grilled onions and roasted peppers - a carnivore's culinary heaven. The sausages are particularly good, and don't forget to douse the meats in the chimi churi sauce.

For dessert, opt for the flan, a very rich and dense version served with whipped cream and a dollop of dulce de leche, a thick caramel-like syrup. Speaking of caramel, try the caramel crepes. The layered cappuccino is a good match for both.

Very atmospheric, with excellent value and generous portions, Tango Baires Cafe is a solid choice for an evening of delectable Argentine fare.

Dear Dale and friends, I really hate having to miss this one, I have to be in Beaumont showing a house at that time. Last minute obligation. I'm soooo sorry! Nancy Nuno is in the waiting list, I just left a message for her so she can attend instead of me. If anyone can communicate with her please let her know a spot is open for this dinner. Enjoy, the food is really good, the best pizzas and sandwitches ever! :) I hope to see you next time.

Finally! I've been dying to participate in a meetup with this group, but up until now I keep having a schedule conflict. I think a small group is best for me for the first time. I am inking it on my calendar right now.
