Join us on this 10 mile advanced level hike high in the Angeles National Forest! We will start from Dawson Saddle and hike the Dawson Saddle Trail about two miles to where it intersects the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). Here we will climb Throop Peak (9138') named after Amos G. Throop, founder of Throop University (now known as Cal Tech). After a brief rest we will descend Throop Peak and continue east on the PCT approximately 2 miles to Mt. Burnham (8997'). Here we will climb a steep trail that leads to the top of Mt. Burnham with its spectacular view of the Mojave Desert. Continuing east on the PCT we will reach the final climb to the top of Mt. Baden-Powell (9399'). If we are lucky the air will be clear enough to see Catalina Island to the west and the snow capped Sierra Nevadas to the east from the top of Mt. Baden-Powell. After lunch we will return the same way we came but without the ascents of Throop and Burnham.
This is a fairly strenuous hike so please sign up only if you have experience hiking at higher altitudes with steep slopes at a brisk pace. Total hiking time should be about 5 hours plus time added for lunch and rest stops. Bring at least 3 liters of water, lunch and snacks, plus the '10 essentials'.
High Desert residents - we can carpool from the Starbucks on Bear Valley Rd. by the mall (in front of Lowes). We'll meet at 7:15am and leave promptly at 7:30am, arriving at the trailhead at 8:30am. Please note that parking at Dawson Saddle requires an Adventure Pass!
