Fist-Full of Lights

Fist-full of Lights!  This is an outreach Meetup where we'll wear our IEAA T-shirts around downtown Riverside's Festival of Lights and engage the public.  We'll mostly ignore the jeers but answer any questions people may have regarding atheism or the group.

We'll probably get some Kettle Korn too.

One could also make one of their own, with fabric paint or a marker

Hi Fred (and everyone) - sorry I picked this up late,

I guess I would say that people can't live in harmony with different beliefs and philosophies unless everyone is on the same page that they want to live in harmony together. I don't think the current political and social climate shows that.

I don't want to ram atheism down anyone's throat, truly, and I think there is value in showing people that atheists exist, enjoy holiday traditions, eat christmas cookies, give to charities, etc..

I have been trying to think of a holiday motto emphasizing that all these traditions are a hodgepodge of religions (like "gifts of the season: tree from the pagan Celts, December 25th from the winter solstice , etc etc). Or maybe the natural wonders of the season: human kindness, the beauty of the natural world, penguins, guilt-free cookie binges.

No, the best would just simply say "be good for goodness sake", and
IEAA underneath. I hope everyone has a great time tonight!

I think Back to the Grind works wonderfully. Parking might be a little rough though.

I'm going to print out some 11x17 posters, any ideas? I was thinking "We're Good without God" for a start, any other ideas?

Could mention the cards for soldiers... "Atheists, doing nice things because its rewarding, not for threat of eternal fire"

I'm curious why we need to go and ram it down their throats? For the most part, they are not going to convince us and we are not going to convince them. The only thing we really accomplish is to create animosity. Those who believe, believe; while those who don't, don't. Why can't we all just live together in peace and harmony under the laws of personal liberty we are afforded in this great country?

Some people find the IEAA though Google, others do it tough events like this. We aren't going out there to change minds, just find people that would be interested in joining, or just knowing they're not alone in how they feel about religion.

When we do these events, I get people come up and hug me. People I've never met, because they thought they were alone in doubting the crap they've been fed. The IEAA is a group just like any other. If someone is offended by our existence, the fault lies with them.
