Decisions That Matter - Meaningful Choice in Game and Level Design
Why is a game "a series of interesting decisions"? What is "orthogonal unit differentiation" and why is it important? Meaningful choice is one of the staples of good and compelling game design, but as a concept it is still poorly understood. This talk from the Game Developers Conference in 2014 is a detailed exploration of choice in games: why it is important, how it ties into the psychological underpinnings of why we play games, and how it connects to other fundamental game design concepts like the space of possibility, motivation, player agency and the actual level design of a game. Viewers will leave with a deeper appreciation of how games become fun and compelling at a fundamental level.
