Anthony Lister: Unslung Heroes

Australian superstar-in-waiting Anthony Lister takes over the Outsiders for a monumental final exhibition of the year.

Unslung Heroes features Impressionist portraits of after-party revellers, dominated by a red, black and white colour palette. Hedonistic yet elegant, the canvases exemplify Lister’s poetic treatment of highbrow and lowbrow themes, and old masters-meet-street art painting style.

Lister's work for Unslung Heroes truly represents yet another step forward for the artist, who broke his auction record this year when his 2007 piece Spider Woman sold for AUS $20,000. The exhibition also contains refined sculptural work, and is an unique occasion to come into contact with some of Lister's best work.

The gallery closes at 7PM, so make sure you arrive before that!

Good points there, Suman, about the context of the works in the gallery. I liked the works at a technical and aesthetic level but, as you perceptively point out with the 'street credding' of the gallery space, the work is almost like a premeditated, deliberate and analytical attempt to bring street art to a crossover point where collectors will buy it as it will look cool in their properties.

Can anyone tell me whereabouts Lister's work is on the street in Shoreditch as I may briefly pop up there tonight to see the Made in Germany exhibition at Blackall Stuidios (think it's something I need to see for my novel research).

there's one on a gateway in christina street, one along the wall inside the carpark along king john's court, and one on a large board on great eastern street, and others nearabout -- if they are all still there.

Thanks. The gallery is quite near Christina Street so I'll take a look if I go tonight - and on Great Eastern Street.

interesting to see how the artist tries to transfer street cred into the gallery -- the ironic scrawls on the walls, the painted door (would have bought that door if i had the dosh), the self-description in the brochure, etc. also, how significantly different the effect of seeing things outdoors and indoors is. lister's walls in shoreditch work by flowing outwards; the gallery introduces multiple containing frames -- the outline of the canvas, the confined room space, the lighting, the commentary around the pieces, and so on. i suppose the viewer isn't always aware of the the multiple frames of the gallery because artists tacitly take them into account in their work.

Anthony Lister is becoming a legend on the Street Art scene thanks to a really well managed public relations image and commercial backing. Not everyone's cup of tea but respected figure in the art world.

Well I don't know of any artist who's everyone's cup of tea, and that would be a sign of weakness, wouldn't it? Looking forward to seeing the art though, and hearing what comments it inspires!
