Start-of-Term Feast!

  • Sep 7, 2014 · 11:30 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

It's September, and it's our first social event - it's the Start-of-Term Feast! Okay, it's really a picnic in the park, but it's a great way to get this group started! I've reserved the 14th Ave. East Meadow picnic site at Golden Gate Park. It's a great spot that is shady, has two picnic tables, restrooms, and we have it all to ourselves! Mwahahaha.

Please feel free to bring snacks or food (preferably Harry-Potter-themed of course). You can list in the comments what you are planning to bring so that we don't end up with 5 different versions of butterbeer cupcakes. (Who am I kidding?! That would be awesome!) This site allows adult beverages, so beer as well as butter beer is welcome.

Feel free to dress up! (I will instantly love you.) Invite your friends. If someone wants to bring a little portable grill, that would be awesome. Since I live off of Mission St., I've decided that this would be a good time to finally purchase a piñata.

And of course, what would be a Start-of-Term Feast without a sorting! One idea that was suggested was to divide members into houses and award points for different activites (10 points for attending volunteer events, 5 for social, 1 for RSVPing, etc.).

Not only will this be a great time to get to know each other but a great time to discuss some ideas for the group. Also I would love to talk to people who expressed interest in becoming more involved with the group, future activities, etc, but mostly I want to get to know all of you and geek out on Harry Potter!

For more information and directions to the picnic site: http://sfrecpark.org/destination/golden-gate-park/ggp-14th-avenue-east-picnic-area/

I will also give out my phone number to all those who RSVP in case you have trouble finding us.

I hope to see you all there!

Very weird question. Is Rebecca Sparrow your real name, or did you read "The Probable Future " and find it totally enchanting like I did?

      September 8, 2014

    • Rebecca Sparrow W.

Well Rebecca is my legal name but Sparrow has been my nickname for almost 7 years. Alice Hoffman is one of my very favorite authors though!

Had a great time even tho' we got there late. The lack of parking & our 1/3 mi. walk made it not so much fun for Mom, but she's a trooper. Looking forward to other events. Prof. Rhyschenda Owens, Muggle studies & Wiccan teacher.

Whoa, you are a Wiccan teacher!? I am Wiccan and have been struggling to find a community to join since i moved out here from Virginia (granted, that was three weeks ago). Suggestions welcome! I am not a happy solitary!

      September 7, 2014

    • Rhyschenda O.

B*B Rachel. There are a lot of Wiccan Harry Potter fans. We can take this conversation off line. rhysnda atsum yahoo. There is a large Pagan community in the Bay Area.

Can you share where you got the frog molds? I would love to bring in chocolate frogs for my students at Halloween.

Of course, I'm sure your students would love them! I got it here: http://www.amazon.com...

Okay in here sitting at one of the picnic tables. There isn't a reserved sign on them and there's a shirtless guy sitting at one. :/

Okay, turns out there are three lanes of the bridge blocked off. Might get there around noon...

    September 7, 2014

    • Johnna

Eeesh yes I just heard, 6 car pileup just west of treasure island. Drive safely, we'll still be here!

      September 7, 2014

  • Johnna

I just got to stow lake dr, plenty of parking is available all around the lake and it's a short walk to the meadow if you park as Far East as possible on the road.

    September 7, 2014

  • Johnna

Also, I'm sure everyone knows but bring layers! Right now it's foggy and cold but the fog should wear off around noon.

I am thinking of parking in the lot under deyoung. Does that seem like a good plan? I am awful at street parking and new to the city, so I am trying for something easy!

    September 6, 2014

    • Johnna

Yeah, it's a pain finding parking in the park on Saturdays and Sundays. I'm going to take my chances around Stow Lake and try to get there super early.

      Eek, I can't be there until 1:00!

      September 7, 2014

Everyone should try and bring their own drinks. Since we can't park close I don't think anyone is going to be able to bring a cooler.

    September 7, 2014

  • Cass S.

    I'm bringing Pumpkin Cookies

    September 7, 2014

  • Eboni

I googled places to park around the area and found a few places that look okay. I don't know much about SF either :). http://www.golden-gate-park.com/parking.html

    September 7, 2014

  • Jessica

Does anyone know the easiest way to get to the picnic area? I'm carpooling into the city and I'm getting dropped off by the park. Is there a good drop off point?

    September 6, 2014

    • Keri

Looking at the map it looks close to where presidio park blvd and Fulton st meet. I don't drive and haven't been yet do I'm not much help.

      September 6, 2014

    • Johnna

If you want to get dropped off at Fulton and 10th, that's pretty close. JFK Dr is closed to cars on Sundays so you can't drive any where closer. If you are going to get dropped off at the southern entrance to the park, go for 9th and Nancy pelosi dr or 9th and Lincoln. Stow Lake Dr and MLK Dr don't close down.

      September 6, 2014

  • Keri

Also I think there is symphony in the park tomorrow so parking might be tricky. Also the roads through the park are closed to cars on Sundays.

    September 6, 2014

  • Keri

Feel free to bring your dogs and any games you might want to play. Piñata did not work out but I'll bring some trivia for house points.

    1 · September 6, 2014

  • Johnna

Also, if you have no idea what house you would be sorted in and want to do a little sorting hat quiz before hand, check out this quick quiz (30 questions, taken from actual pottermore questions): http://www.gotoquiz.com/pottermore_sorting_hat_quiz_2

Or google pottermore sorting hat quiz if you'd like to take another.

Can't wait for tomorrow! I'll be bringing licorice wands for everyone. I thought about bringing corned beef sandwiches as a tribute to the Weasleys... But I think this will be tastier :)

    September 6, 2014

  • Eboni

Hi! I'm uber excited about coming out. I'm going to bring tea sandwiches. My question is: what time will the activities like "sorting" and such happen? I'm coming from Monterey, so I'm probably not going to get there until 1 or 2-ish.

    1 · September 6, 2014

    • Keri

I think I have decided that the "sorting" will be throughout the day. There is nothing steadfast. I figured people will come and go throughout the day so whenever you can get there is great!

      September 6, 2014

  • Jessica

I'm so excited for this! I'm bringing some raisin foccacia, not very Harry Potter, but supper yummy.

    1 · September 6, 2014

  • William B.

I'm bringing BBQ kettle chips, and maybe butter toffee almonds or quakes. It all depends. I know that doesn't sound very Harry Potter, but I'm contributing!

    1 · September 1, 2014

  • Grace C.

AAHHH, really hope I can make this! If so, I'm going to try my hand at pumpkin pasties!

    August 31, 2014

I have work on Sunday but I RSVPd so I'll do my best to stop by for a minute just to say hi to everyone :)

Those are all awesome! thanks I will have to try some of these!

      August 26, 2014

  • Keri

Also if you are not much of a cook, please feel free to bring cups, plates, napkins, ice, etc. Or just bring yourself. Do not feel obligated to bring something if you can't swing it. You being there is what's most important

    August 26, 2014

  • Mackenzie

I happen to be heading to Harry Potter World this week on vacation, so be assured I'll bring lots of HP-themed treats!

    2 · August 25, 2014

  • Johnna

Also, just so people know, the link to the map in the header above is wrong. The link in the description gives you the actual address so you can google map it. Maybe the OP can change that map to reflect 425 John F Kennedy Dr. Also just so people out of town know, most of the roads in the park are closed on Sunday, including JFK Dr.

    August 25, 2014

    • Keri

Yes! Thank you for pointing it out. It was already loaded as a location option in Meetup so I went with it.

I will be bringing Mrs. Weasley's Magical Chocolate Fudge (vegan chocolate almond fudge). I also found this beverage option, but I am not sure how to transport it from San Mateo. I am vegan, but I would love this with almond or soy milk! http://vivaamore.tumblr.com/post/10616508328

Hi Missy, feel free to call me before you leave and I can let you know if it seems to be winding down. I plan on people coming and going throughout the day, and the site is ours for the whole day.
