Power of the Drum and Stress Management

Stress affects us all. You may notice symptoms of stress when disciplining your kids, during busy times at work, when managing your finances, or when coping with a challenging relationship. Stress is everywhere. And while a little stress is OK -- some stress is actually good for you -- too much stress can wear you down and make you sick, both mentally and physically.

What Is Stress?

Stress is the body's reaction to harmful situations -- whether they’re real or perceived. When you feel threatened, a chemical reaction occurs in your body that allows you to act in a way to prevent injury. This reaction is known as "fight-or-flight,” or the stress response. During stress response, your heart begins to race, breathing quickens, muscles tighten, and blood pressure rises. You’ve gotten ready to act. It is how you protect yourself.

Stress can affect all aspects of your life, including your emotions, behaviors, thinking ability, and physical health. No part of the body is immune to stress.

"Stress is basically a disconnection from the earth, a forgetting of the breath...It believes that everything is an emergency. Nothing is that important." -Natalie Goldberg

Drumming to relieve stress

How does the drum help to relieve stress? There are numerous ways this occurs. When people drum, they are generally having fun. It is difficult to be in a playful mode and be stressed at the same time. Also, the drum has the capacity to release negative feelings, of which stress is clearly one. When one hits the drum, he or she is placed squarely in the here and now. Some of our stress is created from past or future thoughts of fear, worry, or regret, but it is very difficult to be stressed and be in the present moment.

Drumming increases our Alpha brainwaves, those brainwaves associated with feelings of well-being and euphoria.

Why Drumming to relieve stress works
Stress reduction generally involves either an active component, such as exercise, or a passive component, such as meditation. Drumming to relieve stress combines both techniques in an innovative approach which releases stress actively through percussive drumming and passively through a calming guided imagery exercise. This combination leaves you with the unique experience of feeling energized, yet relaxed and centered, as well.

Come play with me and my Powerful Drums. I have many drums who are just waiting to be played by you. If you have your own drum please bring it and begin a new relationship that will stay with you for a life time of joy and stress management.

These sessions are offered by your generous donations of $5.00-$10.00. Please note these donations help keep ISA programs available to you. Thank you in advance for your attendance and generosity.

I will have some drums available to use during this session. I can recommend some web sites on line if you want to go that route or here in town Folk Music store on Campbell does have drums. I suggest coming to session first then go from there. The drums I use are called hand drums or flat drums. (I am also going to do a session sometime in August for 10 openings to make your own drum, 10" size if you are interested to do that as well.) Looking forward to meeting you and having you join us in the Power of the Drum and Stress Management :)
