Drum Making Workshop

  • Oct 5, 2013 · 10:00 AM
  • Vision House

The drum is said to be man's oldest musical percussion instrument.

It comes in all shapes and sizes. In the beginning it was small and simple in construction. Simply a piece of hide stretched over the end of a hollow log. Sticks or bones were used as beaters. It was found that by having drums of differing sizes, it was possible then to create a wide variety of tonal sounds and contrast.

The drum is a deep and sacred part of American Indian culture. It is also sacred through out the entire world. The beat of the drum is in sync with the heartbeat of Mother Earth. It is the healing rhythm that we hear when singing, dancing, or respectfully walking through this world. The round form of the drum represents the circle of life and the entire universe.

Have you ever wanted to make your own hand drum? Well now is your chance! I am offering a drum making workshop at my new Pastime Vision House. You will make your very own 10" deer skin hand drum and beater. It is the perfect size for traveling where ever you may go!

I have 9 openings available offering these drums with beaters at a wonderful price of $65.00 per person and drum kit.

Please RSVP if you are interested.  Thank you for participating in this wonderful workshop.

Just me, Ms Dee OwlWoman :)

This workshop was my first event for ISA and I enjoyed it so much. Dee and all of the ladies there were all so friendly and happy. It was great to have all the tools and supplies we needed to make the drums right there just waiting for us. I would have really liked it if the tables were arranged in circle so we weren't all so scattered about with our backs to others or off by ourselves at a table alone. All in all it was a wonderful meetup.

I think the reason why the tables were set up the way they were was because she wanted us to avoid the direct sunlight while working on the drum. I think it was an effort to keep us in the shade and keep the hides from drying too much.

Dee is a patient and supportive teacher. Aside from learning to make a drum, you pick up a lot of helpful knowledge from Dee and the rest of the group.

Hi, I saw your message below, just wanted to make sure this isn't a cancellation of the workshop but merely a response to White Tara. Hope you have enough people coming to hold the workshop. Please clarify. I am still really looking forward to this, whenever it may be. I am coming in from out of town and plan to be at your house at 10, let me know if that isn't necessary. Thanks!

I just realized that Vision House is one of my cousin's neighbors. She lives on the same side of the block where Vision House is located. :-)

I'm am excited about this opportunity. Thank you so much for offering this. I live in a remote area and drum with a few of my neighbors. There is a large hollow log sitting in my yard and my drum group has discussed doing a group project to create a drum. This will be a chance to have a hands on experience at drum making and hopefully share some skills with our group. I have been collecting handles of downed juniper, cottonwood, and willow for drum beaters and looking forward to creating these sacred tools also.
I have been looking forward to meeting you Ms. Dee OwlWoman, just don't get to town often. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
