Non-hike event. This is a wildlife viewing road trip

WHERE Fort Boise Wildlife Management Area (near Parma, Id)

Your Safety Is Your Own Responsibility

Dependent on weather

NO DOGS on this particular event

I try to make it to this migration viewing every year. It's an amazing thing to witness seeing 30 thousand snow geese taking off all at once to the skies, then landing again, then taking off again, etc

There might be anywhere from 20 to 40 thousand Snow Geese along with other abundant wildlife

YouTube LINK http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-P_CftrkQ8

DESCRIPTION Waterfowl are abundant during spring migration. Shallow water and thick riparian vegetation make Fort Boise WMA a waterfowl haven. Canada geese, mallards, gadwalls, cinnamon teal and wood ducks commonly nest on WMA lands

During spring and fall migrations, white-fronted geese, wigeon and pintails visit the area to rest and replenish spent food reserves

During spring and summer months, Fort Boise’s waterways and ponds brim with water birds. Great and snowy egrets, black-crowned night herons and greater yellowlegs are but a few of the shorebirds seen in the wetlands, creeks and smaller river channels

Larger water birds including American white pelicans, double-crested cormorants and ring-billed gulls patrol deeper waters in search of food

HIGHLIGHTS Raptors, Shorebirds, Songbirds, Upland Birds, Waterbirds, Waterfowl

MEET 9:00 AM in parking lot at Lowe's (Meridian Rd and Overland Rd). Map link above

EVENT HOST Jerry Wiseman at[masked]

BRING camera, binoculars, layered clothing, lunch/water, snacks, etc

YES bathrooms facilities

COSTS approximately 80 miles roundtrip (carpool parking lot). The best way to see Idaho is with friends and share the expense associated with the trip, no one person should bare all the costs. We ALL should share in the expense of gas and graciously give a few bucks EACH to whoever is using their vehicle and doing the driving of the carpooling

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Fort Boise is at the confluence of the Snake, Boise, and Owyhee Rivers. Cottonwoods and willows line the waterways, with wetlands and artificial impoundments surrounded by cattail, bulrush, and sedges. Idaho’s most dependable location for thousands of Snow and Greater White-fronted Geese. Common nesters include Cinnamon and Blue-winged Teal, and Red-tailed and Swainson’s Hawks. Large Great Blue Heron and Double-crested Cormorant rookery at the west end

Thanks Jerry and Lisa. This was a fun adventure. Lots of birds and nice folks and a real, live, wild goose chase! Would do it again for sure.

HI Jerry and Lisa, It was great to meet you both. Rich and I had a great time. It was fun talking to people and seeing the geese. We did find a small flock of Sandhills in a field near the marsh after you guys left. In distance, but better than no Sandhills! Thanks so much for organizing this.

Hi everyone, I wasn't able to get there until noon. I was grateful for both Jerry and Valerie and Greg's posting of directions. We saw millions come in and land. We were lucky to see the spectacular display of and eagle going over. They flushed from the pond at Old Fort Boise. Spectacular!!!!!!

Thanks everyone for joining us today. Unfortunately, we didn't get to see the 30 to 40 thousand snow geese like in the years past. I think the winds, people and vehicles, and that they were pretty dispersed over a much wider area this year had a lot to do with it. This is usually the peak time to view them. Anyhow, we still made a day out of it and took many photos of the area. See all next time. :o)

It was a good outing. I had never been to that area before, and am glad to know that preserve exists and how to get there.

Fun morning. I know there were fewer geese than you expected Jerry but I still thought it was great. I was happy with seeing hundreds of snow geese!

Hi everyone, please make sure to update your RSVP to a "NO" if you are unable to attend this event. :o)

We need volunteers to drive in the carpool.

Weather update: Mostly sunny to sunny by 1pm. 0% chance of precip. NW winds at 14 mph @ 11am that will continue to increase (ugh). A good day except for the winds.

Some folks like to bring a chair to “wait” for the snow geese to take flight.

NO GUARANTEES on how many times the snow geese will take flight if any and how many thousands are actually there.

DIRECTIONS: I-84 west, take exit 26 (US 20/26 towards Notus/Parma). Go approx. 15 miles. Once thru Parma, continue heading north on hwy 95 for approx. 2 miles and take a left on Fort Boise Rd and continue approx. 2 ½ miles and park along side of the gravel road. You also should see the Wildlife Management Area signs before turning on Fort Boise Rd.

    March 8, 2013

  • Byron F.

    Hey Jerry,
Can you stop in Nampa. I will drive so this is just so I can join the caravan there. If the photography is good, it's possible I will stay longer than most. Or leave earlier.

    March 7, 2013

      See you at Kmart. :o)

Hi Jerry....is the 12:00 p.m. finish time on this post about what time you expect to be back to Boise?

    February 25, 2013

    • Jerry W.

I would say no latter than 1pm. It will take about 40-45 minutes to get there from the carpool meeting place and approx. the same getting back. I guess it all depends on when some wants to leave.

    February 21, 2013

  • Jerry W.

WEATHER DEPENDENT for best viewing. Hopefully we will have a high pressure sunny, clear day with minimal clouds because the snow geese will be more active. Usally around 10 AM for a good viewing.

We will be viewing from Old Fort Boise Road in between the ponds where the snow geese nesting. Most all of the other areas are closed to public access this time of the year. We can also drive further in the WMA to the Snake River and the Old Fort Monument.
