Let us start the New Year of 2013 (a year that will, we hope, be full of fruitful, thought-
provoking discussions) by talking about the European Revolutions of 1848 in our January
1848 was a memorable year in Europe. Revolutions – or rebellions, depending on your
point of view – erupted in several countries, independently from each other. France.
The Italian States. The German States. Hungary. Poland. Ireland. In some of these
countries, the uprisings were relatively small; in others they were momentous.
Let us look at the reasons behind these revolutions and their legacy.
A reminder: During the three years of its existence, our group has had a tradition of
bringing snacks or beverages to share. Let us keep this tradition alive in 2013, as well as
the years to come, as consuming calories seems to help the discussion run smoothly. In
plain English: Please bring some food or a beverage to share!
The organizers also wish to respectfully remind you to stay on topic. This is a historical
meetup, not a “Let’s discuss current events” meetup, and the organizers would really
like to keep it that way. If, instead of discussing the Revolutions of 1848, you’d rather
discuss Lady Gaga’s revolutionary outfits, there are other meetup groups where you can
do just that.
Lastly: Running a meetup is not free. The Meetup.com website charges organizers for
the privilege of using its services. To their credit, they do a marvelous job of organizing
and publicizing our meetings. To cover the cost, a donation of $2 is respectfully
Please join us January 20!
