German Film: The Edukators!

  • Apr 21, 2012 · 7:30 PM
  • Downtown Tempe

Our next once-a-month Independent Film Night will be on Saturday, April 21 (read further for film synopsis)!  Because of limited space, the event is limited to the first twelve individuals who RSVP Yes. If you don't get a seat in time, feel free to sign up on the waiting list to receive an automatic RSVP seat and e-mail notification in the event of a cancellation (last minute cancellations are not uncommon so watch your e-mail closely, especially the last week & day before an event). We are right on the rail! Those who RSVP will receive the Downtown Tempe address (and directions for railing or driving in) over e-mail the day before.

There is no cover charge and (so far) free parking, but we ask that you bring a finger-food hors d'oeuvre (as opposed to a munchie - no chips/cookies/etc. please) for twelve and a bottle of wine (or non-alcoholic bubbly) to share.  Dessert will be provided.  If you RSVP Yes and later find you cannot make it, please change your RSVP to No as soon as possible (preferably a week in advance or sooner) so someone on the waiting list can automatically be assigned your seat. Please arrive no later than 7:50 (7:30 please if you need to heat an hors d'oeuvre yet). The movie will begin at 8:00.

So bon appetit in both the mental and culinary realms!

The Edukators (2004), is a German film about three young people who are disillusioned with the exploitations of capitalism and loss of heart in their society.  Peter and Jan join forces in a unique form of activism, designed to unsettle the physical and psychological security of the wealthy.  They break into the homes of the ultra rich, but instead of stealing or damaging the property, they simply rearrange the furniture and leave a note to the effect of "You have too much money."  While Peter is committed to the goals and high standard of the movement, Jan is less mature and vulnerable to breaking these boundaries.  When Peter leaves on a short trip, things get out of hand when Jule joins the movement for hedonistic reasons (overwhelming debt), and she and Jan make some unfortunate, hasty and foolish decisions.

This film is a fresh commentary on politics and relationships, and likely more important now than it was in 2004, given the growing disparity of wealth distribution.  It is well balanced, playing on the sympathies of those who once tried to change society, but have awakened to find themselves part of the system and, simultaneously sympathizing with the naive and unguided, but honorable, mission of the young.  Jeff Buckley's version of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah is a particularly moving backdrop to the end of this thought-provoking story.

I loved this film. Even though it's not a new film it is still very timely given the state of the economy and the disparity between the economic level of people.

What an educating film, creative spread of food, and fascinating group of people. I am still humming "Hallelujah" today!

I have been trying out different sauces to bring with my egg rolls and I think I found a real winner. I will be bringing a delicious citrus soy sauce for dipping. This stuff is great, soy sauce with a strong citrus bite.

I will be working that day so will not be able to make anything elaborate so I will stop by Trader Joes and pick up some of their chicken and vegetarian egg rolls.
