Indie Film: Hard Candy!

From: Lynda
Sent on: Monday, July 12, 2010 3:37 PM
Our next once-a-month Independent Film Night will be on Saturday, August 21 (read further for film synopsis)! Because of limited space, the event is limited to the first twelve individuals who RSVP Yes. If you don't get a seat in time, feel free to sign up on the waiting list to receive an automatic RSVP seat and e-mail notification in the event of a cancellation (last minute cancellations are not uncommon so watch your e-mail closely, especially the last week & day before an event). We are right on the rail! Those who RSVP will receive the Downtown Tempe address (and directions for railing or driving in) over e-mail the day before.

There is no cover charge and free parking, but we ask that you bring an hors d'oeuvre (as opposed to a munchie) for twelve and a bottle of wine to share. If you RSVP Yes and later find you cannot make it, please change your RSVP to No as soon as possible so someone on the waiting list can automatically be assigned your seat. Please arrive no later than 7:50 (7:30 please if you need to heat an hors d'oeuvre yet). The movie will begin at 8:00.

So bon appetit in both the mental and culinary realms!

The expression ?Hard Candy? is slang for an under-aged girl, used amongst pedophiles who troll the internet. The film Hard Candy (2005) was inspired by a news article about young Japanese girls scouting the internet with the goal of unveiling pedophiles. Haley, an extremely precocious but psychologically disturbed 14-year-old girl meets Jeff, a charming 32-year-old photographer on the internet. Suspecting that he is a pedophile, she goes to his home with a singular and brutal goal of revenge.

Due to the controversial nature of the film, the budget was kept under a million dollars so the studio wouldn?t ask for changes. As a result, Hard Candy is a classic independent film. It is edgy, unnerving, and controversial, relies on interesting dialog and character development, and leaves the viewer questioning which character is the criminal and which is the victim, and whether anyone is ever entirely guilty or innocent. Warning: This film is brutal and not for the faint of heart!
