Tempe, AZ 85281
Our next once-a-month Independent Film Night will be on Saturday, August 8! (Read further for film synopsis.) Because of limited space, the event is limited to the first twelve individuals who RSVP Yes. If you don't get a seat in time, feel free to sign up on the waiting list to receive an automatic RSVP seat and e-mail notification in the event of a cancellation. Those who RSVP will receive the Downtown Tempe address (and directions for free parking right on-site) over e-mail the day before.
There is no cover charge and free parking, but we ask that you bring an hors d'oeuvre (as opposed to a munchie) for twelve and a bottle of wine to share. If you RSVP Yes and later find you cannot make it, please change your RSVP to No so someone on the waiting list can be invited in your place. Please arrive no later than 7:50. (7:30 please if you need to heat an hors d'oeuvre yet). The movie will begin at 8:00. So bon appetit in both the mental and culinary realms!
The great title of our next film was enough to first peak my curiosity, but in case you require more enticement, I will elaborate. Love and Human Remains
is a clever, dark Canadian film that came out in the 90s. The film is set in an anonymous large Canadian city, and centers around two roommates who were once lovers. David is a gay may who has become so afraid of loving, being loved and life itself, that he prefers menial labor to his past acting career. Candy, on the other hand, in spite of numerous disappointments, is explorative and persistent in her search for love and meaning in her life. A serial killer subplot provides a backdrop which I feel reflects the risks and dangers (e.g. AIDS) of relationships and human connections. One of the most interesting characters in this film is a gentle, compassionate dominatrix sex worker. Love and Human Remains
is a multi-layered story of human connections, despair, and redemption with great character development, interesting ideas and refreshingly clever dialog.
