Camping at Brown County

Nicknamed the “Little Smokies” because of the area’s resemblance to the Great Smoky Mountains, Brown County encompasses nearly 16,000 acres of rugged hills, ridges and fog-shrouded ravines. Glaciers from the most recent ice ages stopped short of the “hills o’ Brown,” but their meltwaters helped create the narrow ridges, steep slopes and deep gullies of Brown County State Park. Indiana’s largest park is a traditional fall color hot spot, with nearly 20 miles of tree-lined roads and many scenic vistas overlooking miles of uninterrupted forestland.

The park’s rustic Abe Martin Lodge offers accommodations that include motel rooms, cabins, dining and conference facilities and an indoor water park. Large campgrounds, hiking and mountain biking trails, interpretive services, a saddle barn for guided horse rides and a separate horseman campground with 70 miles of horse trails are some of the things that make Brown County State Park popular year-round.

The surrounding county and nearby Indiana town of Nashville are famous for their unique shopping, dining, arts and crafts, history, entertainment, and outdoor adventure opportunities.

Great fun despite the snake and rain. We won't let a little rain get us down. Glad to have two new members, Jen and Michelle join us for the weekend. Hope we didn't scare you off! Hopefully more of you will join us at Turkey Run on August 16.

Good morning everyone. Can I get a quick confirmation of who is coming, it looks like we've had some changes. I need to know how much food to bring for Saturday. It looks like it will cool off for the weekend! Thanks

I'm sorry, give me a call if you think you'll make it. You are welcome to come to the pitchin if you'd like. (317)[masked]

I will cook fresh green beans and potatoes for the pitch-in on Saturday night. I am also bringing wood for a campfire, at my site, on Friday night. If anyone wants to cook their supper there, you are welcome to use my fire. I'll supply the hot dog sticks. Where are you looking to go kayak/canoeing?

The following link is a Google Map to where the kayaking will take place. The point in the NE is the Crooked Creek Launch Ramp where we will meet Most High Adventure Outfittrers at a time to be determined. https://maps.google.co...

Hey Heather....how will parking work at the sites? I think I read somewhere that it's one car per spot.

We will be doing a pitch in on Saturday evening. I will bring the meat, everyone else needs to bring a side, drinks a table service as well as a chair. Please let me know if you will be attending so that I will know how much meat to buy. Also, I have not received dues from anyone. They are $5 a year to cover this website cost and meat for the pitchin if there is any left over after I pay the website fees. Let me know if you have any questions Thanks

I have booked site 397. I also would be interested in kayaking or canoeing if you have had enough interest. Are you doing a Saturday evening potluck?

    July 14, 2013

  • Heather H.

It's almost that time. Does everyone have their site, I see Connie has hers. Also, is there interest in a kayak/canoe trip, we will need to see if we can get reservation so let me know. Zak, did you find a ride? I may stop in to see a couple clients so I'm not sure what my schedule will be for carpooling.

Another note, there has been interest shown in a Kayak/Canoe trip. Please respond to this message if you are interested. This will incur additional cost, however we do receive a discount (see Steve's earlier post). Don't forget to let me know soon!

Most High Adventure Outfitters is offering IN Camping Club members 10% off of the wilderness kayaking in the Deam Wilderness Area of Hoosier National Forest. The launch point is at the crooked Creek Launch Ramp about 25 minutes from the BCSP west entrance. Visitors to Brown County routinely tell us this trip was the highlight of their Brown County experience (better than zip lining and horseback riding). FOR ICC members the 5 hour trip will be $50/ solo kayak, $70/tandem kayak, and $70/canoe. We also have equipment sized for children paddlers (boats, PFDs, paddles), and offer families additional discounts. This trip also traverses the Middle Fork Wildlife Refuge and is a true wilderness experience. There is also a better than 50% chance you will see the resident bald eagles.

For reservations (required) call Steve at (812)[masked]
