Mention Indian food to most Brits and the usual mental image is of a cheap curry house, serving well-known dishes like chicken tikka marsala or even balti curries, with lashings of Cobra beer. It may come as somewhat of a surprise to find out that both these two dishes actually originated in Britain, tikka marsala in the late 60s/early 70s and Baltis in the 80s from the Midlands. Most curry houses serve a travesty of genuine Indian food, and the menus are usually based on local adaptations of popular Punjabi dishes such as tandoori chicken, and do not reflect in any way the wealth and diversity of the cuisine of the Indian sub-continent. However, there are some restaurants in London that serve good approximations of Indian food, from both the north but also the south, with its emphasis on strong flavours and predominantly vegetarian ingredients. It is also fairly easy to obtain ingredients to prepare genuine Indian dishes at home. Hopefully this group will allow its members to sample both restaurant and home cooking and improve your appreciation of the fine art of Indian cuisine.
