Are you writing (or planning to write) a fictional novel?

Then world building is an essential element of the craft. In fact, it could be argued that world building is THE essential element of fiction writing.

Writers can get hung up on world building, especially when they make the common error of assuming that the world being built is the foundation or building block of the story, rather than the other way around.

So how should we think about world building in our fiction?

What steps can we take to build compelling worlds without sacrificing or subjugating the story to the world we're building?

How can we know when we're sharing too much, and robbing the reader of their employment in our world building exercise?

How can we know when we're leaving our world too bare, creating a story that has no real place, no culture, or no "real" existence?

Let's get together and talk about world building and how we can create compelling worlds that will bring our readers into the story we want to tell without leaving them on the outside looking in.

Michael Bunker is Michael Bunker is a USA Today Bestselling author, off-gridder, husband, and father of four children. The Amish/Scifi world of Pennsylvania has enticed over 20 authors to write fanfic in that playground. He was a world building panelist at the last Dragoncon, and is the Executive Producer and co-creator of the Apocalypse Weird brand world - the MARVEL of digital publishing which now has over 30 authors writing novels within the co-operative world.
