JOAWS Christmas Village & Bazaar
"The Bill Riggs Photo Booth"
December 6 & 7
Dedicating this event to Bill Riggs!
This event will still go on...
Jeff Coates took this picture 2 years ago, December 2011, at a charity Help-Portrait event for veterans. That was 2 years ago! Bill loved being involved in charity work with the JOAWS photo booth being another venture he suggested when I told him we'd be having a booth for the club, a place to exhibit and possibly sell our pictures. Bill had suggested we add the photo booth...and we did! He also was the main force for us getting a Portraiture Focus Group going 2 years ago, teaching us studio lighting; and assisted by Greg Mitchell who taught us all about posing.
Little did I know what an affect, an impact, that picture would have. It was a constant reminder to him to "get well enough to attend the JOAWS Christmas Bazaar and take photos again". When I visited him later when he was at VA Hospital, I asked where he had the picture? He pointed to where he had it placed...within eyeshot from his bed. He said with determination, "I'm going to that!; I'm going to be there!" One of his friends who was in the room kiddingly said back, "Yes, and I'm going to dress as an elf!" I said to this friend, "..well, get your suit ready...because we're going to see that this happens!" We were all having fun with this that evening...as we didn't know if this was even possible, but we hoped it would be.
Well, we were certain that was going to happen as when I visited him with Gaynel Bryan, former organizer of the club, we were totally amazed at how much he had improved. He was no longer bedfast, not using a walker, needed no assistance walking, and that very day...gave up his cane! Oh, and he's lost weight...lots and lots of weight!
Today, Thanksgiving...November 28, I received word that Bill had passed away at 9:55 am that day. It was a shock to us all. The culprit...sepsis, which I'm very familiar with as that is what the cause of my own husband's death was.
I still think this picture encouraged him; I like to think it may have been the hope he needed for having been able to return to this event...
So, with his spirit in mind...I'm dedicating this event...this photo booth portion this year, and any future dates, as the "Bill Riggs" Photo Booth! He deserves a big, BIG hand! As he is one big guy with a huge, huge, heart!
We need all of you to be there...to help with this event. We want you to bring some of your photo related items to be sold at the club's booth, and for you shooters to be there to help with the picture taking!
All funds from the photo booth go to the church as a "Thank You" as they've been extremely kind in providing us "free" space for other events. However, anything sold form the vendor booth, is yours 100%.
This is held at the Joy of All Who Sorrow Church... Christmas Bazaar (16th & Delaware). Bill doesn't know if he'll dress as Santa this year, but says he will be there! (You can see several pictures from past events when he did, look under his photo in the Photo Album).
Let’s make this our BIG CHARITY for this year.
Below is another picture of some of our team from IMUPC who were there 2 years ago...yes, all dressed up for this photo! It sure was a fun evening!!!
If you're willing to come and help...if not the full time, just an hour or so would help! We will need members to man the photobooth, printer, costumes, etc. again this year.
Costumes were loaned to the church from the Indiana Repertory Theatre (IRT) from their Dickens plays. In 2012, similar costumes were loaned by Margie's Costumes.
Dressing up in period style is NOT an expectation; but the team decided they'd like a group picture similar to what was being taken of visitors who wanted their pictures taken this fun event.
This is a 2-day event: Friday evening (6-9pm) and Saturday (10-3 pm). We have been privileged to have both booth space to sell photos, etc. and a portrait studio, which is where this picture was taken (by Bill Riggs).
This year, we're trying something a little different. Those taking part with the portrait studio will assist with all aspects, which includes assisting those who want pictures taken re costume selection, paper work/payment, taking photos, and even printing photos on site, etc. I've purchased a 2nd printer to help speed the delivery process for printing...
(Details of those duties will be forthcoming once we know who all will be taking part.)
If you want to be part of this very fun and exciting event...please RSVP. This is an ideal situation for Portrait Focus Group members. There is plenty to be done...so, other members are more than welcomed to sign up and help. When we have sufficient names, we'll call a meeting to discuss further details.
