FOCUS GROUP: Portraiture (Creative)

Creative Portrait Focus Group

(Meets every other Monday @ 6 pm

but nights and frequency will change in 2014)

The Creative and Studio Portrait FGs are for passionate photographers, hobbyist and advanced photogs who are committed to moving their photography to the next level. We will cover topics that will advance your skills, produce wonderful images and provide tools to help you sell your craft.

NOTE: All focus groups, these included, are open to ALL members, whether you are new to photography or advanced.  There are times some may feel discouraged if your skill level is not where it should be (or you think it isn't), but keep in mind that IMUPC's mission is to provide a platform for all levels with the goal of inspiring thru sharing skills and knowledge.   The Creative and Studio FGs will be more supportive to the advanced photographer, but all are welcome to attend, take part, and learn...  There will also be video and discussion/critiquing evenings.  All members are welcome to attend any or all of these! (See Carol's Notes below which explains this in more depth.  Keep posted as I will keep updating.)

Andre Arnold will be leading the Creative Portrait Focus Group.  See below for his agenda for this meeting

  • 6:00 - 6:15 pm: Social
  • 6:15 - 6:30 pm:  Information Sharing
  • 6:30 pm:  Andre (or designate)

Meetings will be at the Attic until told differently.  I am in the process of setting up meetings for us at the Athenaeum and North United Methodist Church ("NUMC").

Keep an eye on this posting for information re location(s).   If meetings will not be in the Focus Room (Attic, 2nd Fl of the Carriage House), I will post a notice on the door of the Attic (152 E. 14th Street).

Andre will provide meeting specific information from this point down:

This meeting we will step out of our comfort zones to introduce or expand your knowledge of video. Video??? Yes, video! We will discuss cameras that can record video, tips to make it better, how to incorporate video with your photography and how video may help you increase your exposure and/or sell more images.

We will have a guest, with more video experience than I, to add to the discussion. We will look at the current software available to produce videos of stills and video from the basics to more advance programs from adobe.

Carol's Notes:

As we move into 2014, we will initiate a Studio Portraiture Focus Group for those in the club who have been asking that we offer something a bit different...i.e. emphasize portraiture in studios, creating an in-house studio, senior shots, studying a variety of lights and equipment...learning the basics.  If you, or someone you know might be interested in leading this group, please let me know.

Also, in 2014 we will devote a night for videos (this will include portraiture related videos only).  If you or someone you know would like to lead this evening, please let me know.

And...we will have one evening for discussion/critiquing.  This will come from either/or, or all...Creative, Studio, Videos.  Various individuals will lead this group.

One of the concerns sent to me was...  I was taking something away, and that those attending one group couldn't attend the other, etc. Let me put an end to that: ABSOLUTELY NOT TRUE!  ALL MEMBERS ARE WELCOMED TO ATTEND ANY/ALL OF THESE.

Briefly at the last meeting, I mentioned the fact we could venture into such interesting areas as "aerial" or "event", etc. in the Creative group.  "Pet" or "fashion" photography, etc. in the Studio.  I would like to hear if you have even more ideas!

I'm in hopes we will know where we will meet by January 2014.  Presently I'm waiting on the North United Methodist Church (NUMC) to get back with me.  NUMC will provide a room where we can leave equipment such as back drops and studio lights up indefinitely without being disturbed. It will be ideal for the Studio Portraiture FG.

At the Athenaeum, anything set up, will need to be taken down that same night because other groups meet in that room (the Max Kade, which rents for $75/night).  We get it free for doing their 5 annual events.  Since the Creative Portraiture FG varies its locations...and may ideally want to utilize some of the various areas and/or ongoing events at the Athenaeum...this location is ideal for its meetings.  There are a lot of opportunities out of this one, it is the ideal space for anything "Creative"...

We will be moving away from the Attic in time as I plan to eventually give that space up and permanently move back home.  The Attic will be available, though, until we have the other spaces resolved and know that they are working well for us.  I had planned to move the end of the year...but now, since we're still waiting on the NUMC, I will be staying until late be sure we're taken care of re space.

Andre has a special guest coming this Monday evening, with the main focus on video.  We will spend a little time to answer any questions re the upcoming JOAWS and Sankt Nikolas events.

If you have any questions re changes for 2014...please address those to me, not Andre.

Andre is leading the Creative FG...not the Studio or the video or discussion/critiquing evenings.  BUT...if you have specific questions, ideas, etc. specific to the Creative FG, yes, those do need to go to Andre...  Please do not confuse these they are two distinct focus groups...with joint video and discussion/critiquing nights.
