SPECIAL PHOTO SHOOT: Notre Dame "Basilica of the Sacred Heart"

  • Aug 18, 2013 · 8:30 AM
  • Basilica of the Sacred Heart (Notre Dame)

Basilica of the Sacred Heart - Notre Dame University

In preparation for the November 1 "Historic Churches of Indianapolis and Indiana", we've planned a trip to South Bend to take pictures on the campus of Notre Dame...the "Basilica of the Sacred Heart".

Throughout the Basilica and its museum, you can uncover Notre Dame's past through artifacts that reveal the history behind both the Catholic Church and the Congregation of Holy Cross. You will also discover for yourself the exciting beginnings of Our Lady's University as seen through the eyes of its visionary founder, Rev. Edward Sorin, C.S.C.

The 18th seems to be the best time.  We can  get in at 1 pm.  (There is mass at 10 am).

We will plan to leave Indianapolis at 8:45 am, allowing us time to stop for a quick bite for lunch.  We will have from 1 - 4 pm to shoot...if we need that long.   There are many more things to shoot than the Basilica if you want, but this will be our main focus.

Time and location for departure has changed.  We will meet at Starbucks, 96th & Meridian, at 8:30 am and leave there at 8:45 am (sharp).  Don't miss us.  It is vital to know if you need a ride or are driving.

Tripods are allowed.   They do have tour guides, who will go around with us and point various things out...but to get our own guide, we have to have a decent # going.

Dave, or anyone else wanting/needing a ride. We won't have any problems with transportation.

Sundaresh, Connie, and myself will be driving. So, we should be in fine shape. Just be sure you are there at 8:30 am.

We'll have seats for everyone... Connie and I are stopping at the Attic at 8 am; then going to 96th & Meridian (Starbuck's) to meetup with Sundaresh. We will follow each other from there...and take whatever number of cars we need. Everyone will have a seat!!!

Below is a driving/riding list of those who want a ride/or ride as a group. I'll keep updating:

    Driving:
Sundaresh: Jim E, Dave Scott, Andre
    Connie: Tom, Carol, Heather

Carol (if a 3rd car needed). Mirage: Not sure if Mirage will be driving or needing a ride.
Otis: Will be driving due to his personal schedule being different.

Connie, Heather and I may ride w you unless we have more going. I'll still plan to drive to the Attic with Heather...and then on to Starbucks at 96th if no more show up there. Then when we get to Starbucks we can see what our count is...

Others who may still want to go... Please RSVP and/or be either at the Attic by 8 am or at Starbucks by 8:30 am. We will all meet at Starbucks at 8:30 and depart from there at 8:45 am.

We do not want to leave anyone behind...that wants to go.

David and all... Several have expressed an interest in Chicago. There is at least an hour or more's drive between South Bend and Chicago. I think we need to make a Chicago area only trip for another time...with plenty of lead time. Some have suggested that we take either the train or bus up... So, why don't you investigate that for a late October or mid November time... (Look at the calendar and make sure of available times...keeping in mind that the Nov 1 date will consume a lot of people's weekend time.)

ok i am going to take this event a step further if anyone is interested. What if we also make a stop over in chicago downtown for night shots. i am more then willing to make this an eventful trip. If i had reliable transportation i would drive but not at this time but if anyone wants to extend this trip let me know. David

Sundaresh will be leaving from 96th & Meridian at Starbuck's. Connie and I will go to the Attic first and pickup anyone who has/needs a ride from there. Then, we will go to the Starbucks and see if we need to move anyone around...and follow each other to the church/campus at Notre Dame (South Bend). Let's make sure everyone gets a ride.

Looks like we qualify for our own tour guide but it's questionable if we will get one! When I called, the person in the gift shop said they were volunteers and sometimes don't show up. But, that there were exceptionally good descriptive material all over with history, etc.

    Carol

PS: This will be a fun day! Both the church and campus if we have time. We will also stop along the way for a bite to eat. Any ideas re this, let us know...

If you have not stated how you will be going, please do so. I need to know: 1) will you be driving separately? 2) will you be coming to the Attic to pick any passengers up 3) if passengers, how many can you take?
    4) If you are willing to take passengers, what is your schedule...so they can meet you? Will you be coming to the Attic and we all somewhat follow each other.

We want to be sure everyone has a ride and no one is left behind. This should be a lot of fun and offer some great shots!!!

(I will be out of town Thursday and Friday)...but will be checking emails Saturday...if not before. Remember: email me at [masked] (home); I don't go in the office over the weekend that much and that is where the club emails go.

I talked called the Basilica today to confirm our number (or close). They said it was questionable re a volunteer guide...as sometimes they "don't show up". However, he did say that there were exceptionally well developed pamphlets throughout that spoke of the various features, artifacts, history, etc. He said that they have gotten a lot of praise for their thoroughness. The church was started in 1675, so historically, a lot there! He mentioned a log structure that is close by (possibly the first church on the site...but don't hold me to that). There is an onsite museum and said he'd direct us to that structure. Times will be 1-4 pm at the church. Doors will be locked if they are still conducting any services. There are 2 baptisms after mass, but he said they should be finished before 1 pm.
We are free to roam and take pictures on the Notre Dame campus.

Hi David! Let's wait and see who responds before we make that decision. I have a feeling we'll probably have 3 - 4 cars going. Right now, I think we have 10 folks going...and I think this could double by next weekend. If so, we'll see if at least one car would like to go that early. My friend June will be riding with me. She lives very close to me and I'll probably pick her up on my way into town. When you say "early" recall this is about a 3 hour drive...so, what time are you thinking? If we left a 5 am, we wouldn't get there until about 8 am... Let me know...

Joelle and I are looking forward to the shoot. We will most likely head up there on our own that morning.

It's close to 3 hrs. I didn't want to get up and hit the road too early as that will just make me that much more tired later in the day, when coming home. If all agreed, we could leave at 8:15 am. We can't get into the church until 1 pm. (1 - 4 pm). They have mass at 10 am...can't get in then either (to take pictures). We could roam the campus beforehand. And, we will also need to tend to everyone's dietary needs...

We'll also want to be sure to leave there no later than 6 pm as we'll need to factor in 3 hours coming home. It will still be daylight, which will be good. We'll stop to grab some refreshments/dinner/something on the way back to break up the drive... Even still, that is 6 hours of driving in one day...and I have to get some rest once home, so I can go to work early the next morning without being overly tired. We won't want to push this too hard as I'm not 25 any longer.
