Some of you may think this email a big strange, but I don't!... I've created a Bill Riggs album (see the Photo albums).
This is a tribute to Bill Riggs...one heck of a great big Teddy Bear with a heart of gold! Some of you didn't even know Bill, and I must admit that I didn't know him well...but, well enough to know this guy was a real treasure and one we will miss!
I first encountered Bill a few years back when he and Greg Mitchell paired up and graciously agreed to do an educational program for us. He went around the room helping explain some of the different lessons they had taught in their presentation. Someone took a picture of Bill helping me.
Later, being a long time member of the Indpls Sailing Club, I had invited members out for a sail or ride on the Mary Margaret, the racing committee boat. Bill came...and it was one heck of a windy day! Very windy, if I recall, such that they eventually called the race off!!! He said he enjoyed the experience, but didn't expect to be working SOOO hard. Waiting to see if the race would continue, that was when he/I talked and he expressed his church involvement and interest in charity work.
Later, when at a Handi-capable event 2 years ago, my cabin and Bills cabin had joined to do their activities together. Bill and I were there to take photos of the campers. Again, I got to see more of the "real" Bill Riggs! He loved what he was doing! And, he could relate so well with the campers. Now, when it came to taking pictures...we're talking about the professional (Bill) and me (the absolute amateur)...but, he very patiently, showed me a few things to help me get better shots! I was forever thankful!
In December of 2011, Bill took lead for the Help Portrait event... You can see many of those pictures as he is the big teddy bear Santa! He did such a good job, that he had some of the children believing he really was...not a fake, a phony...but the real one!!!
That same Christmas, Bill headed up our first photo booth at the JOAWS church for their Christmas Bazaar! That was a real hit! I have some pictures from that...but I'll have to find them and add to the album.
And...most recently, Bill, Greg Mitchell, Joe Konz, and myself put together our first Portraiture Focus Group. We tried to make this an educational program with Greg teaching the class the techniques of posing...and Bill on Studio lighting.
It was a lot of fun; we all learned a lot!
And, I don't want to forget the time at Garfield Park at the Conservatory when Bill said..."Let's have a seat over here on this bench and let me show you how to set your camera so you can get a really good shot of that "flower".
Yes...Bill Riggs was a big guy...a big, big teddy bear! We're going to miss him!!!
PS: Only a handful know that Bill is at Methodist Hospital in the Critical Care Unit; his prognosis is not promising. I would like us to send positive energy waves his direction. He deserves our love and attention at this time and if you have a photo you would like to upload of Bill or something you'd like to say in the photo album space...please do...!.
