Taking care of animals at IndyHumane (10-12 needed)

  • to
  • IndyHumane

7929 North Michigan Road, Indianapolis, IN (map)

    39.863060 -86.199318

  • We will be volunteering at the Humane Society of Indianapolis, performing whatever tasks need to be done. Some tasks will involve animals and others will not. You can bring kids 16 and older. Please read all of these notes (I've pasted directly from their email to me) as they seem to be rather strict with dress code, etc. Also note that (supposedly) if you arrive more than 10 minutes late, they will ask you NOT TO VOLUNTEER.

Group Volunteering includes full tour of IndyHumane.

Dress Code: You must be dressed properly in order to participate. If group does not have designated shirts, then group members should wear plain, red t-shirts/sweatshirts (red is how we identify Volunteers in the shelter/shirts must have sleeves) Full Length Jeans or Khakis (no shorts/no skirts/no holes) Tennis Shoes (no flip flops/no sandals/whole foot needs to be covered) Coats/Jackets – some tasks may involve group members going outside. Name Tag (this can be just a sticker). NOTE: We do not have a locked area for personal items such as handbags or keys so please do not bring important property into the shelter

    Cell Phones:
Cell phone use will not be permitted while you are volunteering. Photographs of Animals
We ask that you do not take photos of animals who are NOT available for adoption. Where to Go When You Arrive:
Come to the main adoption lobby doors. You will need to ring the doorbell on the left side of the door to gain access to the building if you arrive outside of hours of operation.

Who to Ask for When you Arrive:
Ask for Shawna Sims when you arrive.

Waivers: Waivers need to be turned in when you arrive to volunteer. Waivers turned in by Minors (16-17 year olds) must have a parental signature. Members will not be allowed to participate without completed waivers. (It is YOUR responsibility to make sure you get these from me, as I cannot attach it to the meetup.. I'm going to try to email it out, but I'm not sure if I can.)

You will assist with tasks that need to be performed at the time you arrive to the shelter. Tasks may include facilities upkeep, kennel cleaning, dog walking, cat socializing, and administrative assistance.

Please remember that this is an animal shelter and we house dogs and cats of different shapes and sizes. You are expected to be able to assist with any tasks that are given to you regardless of the animals you are asked to interact with. Cleaning is a big part of working with animals directly and there will be poop scooping and mopping involved, so please do not bring group members who are uneasy or unwilling to assist with that type of work.
