Welcome to our Buddhist Meditation Group in English. We meet weekly on Saturday mornings at the An Lac Temple in Indianapolis. The address is 5249 E. 30th Indianapolis, IN 46218. The An Lac Sangha has been around many years but their temple building is very new and just seeing it is an event in itself.

A Wonderful Opportunity to Learn the Ultimate Meditation Practice Discovered by the Buddha is being offered by the Indianapolis Meditation Meetup Group at An Lac Temple, Saturdays at 10 a.m.
It’s called Vipassana.
And you don’t have to be or become a Buddhist to participate. It actually is a totally non-denominational practice and is being practiced by individuals who belong to every religious organization in the world. (In fact, when you think about it, the Buddha wasn’t a Buddhist. The dogma and ritual that came after his death became what we call Buddhism.)
O.K., then what is Vipassana.
Vipassana has another name - Insight Meditation - The technique of Vipassana Meditation is a simple, practical way to achieve real peace of mind and lead a happy, useful life. Vipassana means "to see things as they really are" and is a logical process of mental purification through self-observation. From time to time, we all experience agitation, frustration and disharmony. When we suffer, we do not keep our misery limited to ourselves; instead, we keep distributing it to others. Certainly this is not a proper way to live. We all long to live at peace within
ourselves, and with those around us. After all, human beings are social beings; we have to live and interact with others. How, then, can we live peacefully? How can we remain harmonious ourselves, and maintain peace and harmony around us?
Vipassana enables us to experience peace and harmony: it purifies the mind, freeing it from suffering and deep-seated causes of suffering. The practice leads step-by-step to the highest spiritual goal of full liberation from all mental defilements.
Vipassana is also known as the science of mind and body, and how the mind is influenced by the body and in turn how the body is influenced by the mind all happening at the depth of the unconscious mind.
Since the day of our birth, our minds develop two distinct habit patterns: the habit pattern of reacting with craving whenever there is a pleasant sensation and reacting with aversion whenever there is an unpleasant sensation. And there are thousands of these sensations throughout the body - pleasant and unpleasant - of which the conscious mind is not aware.
Meanwhile, the unconscious mind which is constantly reactive becomes a slave of its own habit pattern of craving and aversion. This habit creates discomforts. We feel that something is out of kilter, we lose our peace of the mind and experience disharmony. Without this balance of mind, it is easy to become a miserable person. Sadly, this pattern continues without our awareness that we are actually harming ourselves. And, because we are unaware, the pattern continues.
How can we stop this destructive behavior?
Intellectually, once we are told about the mind’s behavior you would think it would be a simple matter to just stop this behavior and be free of it. Unfortunately, it would seem that we are hardwired into continuing this behavior no matter how much effort we put into stopping it.
And here’s the problem that we continually come up against when we attempt to change any harmful behavior: our understanding of problem is just intellectual and isn’t a strong enough understanding of the problem to cause us to end it. What is required is an experiential understanding which is much stronger in nature and over a period of time will cause a change in behavior. Even contemplating the situation does not seem to have much effectiveness in eliminating the problem. How then to achieve this “experiential understanding”?
This is what the Buddha discovered in his early attempts to correct the situation: no matter how much effort was put into changing that in the end nothing really changed, the mind always has its way, the mind always wins.
Even his studies with the Indian masters of his day lead to the same conclusion, that after extraordinary effort, the mind always reverted back to its original nature of its own habit pattern of craving and aversion, craving and aversion.
Determined, the Buddha settled himself under the Bodhi tree in meditation and vowed that he would not arise until he had overcome the problem.
As we know, he did solve the problem through his amazing concentrative efforts and the wisdom that evolved from those efforts. His efforts became the practice of Vipassana which allows one to experientially investigate the true nature of any problem and put an end to it through practice. This is what the Buddha discovered, that through meditation one can develop the wisdom to overcome any problem when the true nature of the problem is revealed, not intellectually but experientially.

If the answer is “yes,” next Saturday, we will be holding an introductory session to introduce the practice of Vipassana. This practice will be non-sectarian in nature as will all of the following nine sessions.
In order to participate, we ask that you fill out a form similar to this
we will be passing out at next Saturday’s meeting. Here we will be asking your to make your personal commitment to completing this initial body of instruction. If you foresee that you will be not be able to make at least nine of the ten sessions, then you are advised to wait until we present this program again.

June 15, 2013 Facing the world and Graduation
Lunch (Mindful Eating) is served at 12:00 p.m. and attendance is part of the teaching. Usually class will be over by 12:30.
These courses are free of charge. The noon meal is a shared project of the members who always provide a nutritious, vegetarian meal as part of our meditation practice. The facilities are provided by the Vietnamese community and without their support we would be unable to hold these teachings. Therefore, donations are not required but are gratefully accepted.

Parking is now available in the back of the temple. Take Hawthorne Avenue to East 28th Street (the first side street you come upon driving down Hawthorne Lane) and make a right. Take East 28th Street all the way down, and make another right onto Butler Avenue. Follow Butler Avenue until you are behind the temple. Please to be considerate of the neighborhood, do not park in front of the temple on the grass or in front of any of the homes adjacent to the temple.
Sitting cushions are provided.
Our practice consists of sitting meditation, a walking meditation, another sitting meditation that is followed by a question and answer period (approximately 1 hour). This is followed by a luncheon prepared by the Western members of the An Lac Temple and is provided free of charge.
NOTE: Although there is no cost for these meetings and donations are not required or expected, they are greatly appreciated if you choose to make them. Donation boxes are in the front and rear of the Buddha Hall.
