Backups, paper wallets, and vanity addresses

Discuss backup strategies, paper wallets, vanity addresses, and of course the latest news and price action. My favorite meetup spot, Hearthstone's, has closed down, so we need a new location. Please offer suggestions. Preferably it will be somewhere with good beer (with a few craft brews), pub food, plenty of seating, and somewhat quite enough to be able to hold a conversation.

Also, let's start having some fun with the price. Try and guess what the price will be the day of our meeting at 7:00. We can all send in a small amount and the closest to the price wins the pot. Here are more details.

Rules:
Objective: Guess the price to the nearest dollar.
Deadline: 1/1/2014 Midnight Eastern time.
Cost: 1 millibitcoin (.001) or approximately 90 cents (as of today 12/15/2013)
Pot address: 1M3gE8wfPrYr5EWSYahUbuh8fNjwb3z3Kg
Source for price: bitstamp.net, rounded to the nearest dollar
Price as of: 7:00 PM Eastern on 1/15/2014
Number of allowed guesses: 3
Closest to the price. It doesn't matter if you go over or not, just as long as you are the closest. Payouts will go back to the same address it came from. You do not need to be present to win.

To cast your vote, send 1 millibitcoin to the address above with your guess appended to the end. For example, if I think the price will be $850 then I will send in 1 millibitcoin with 850 appended to the end. For example I would send .0010850. Notice I did 0850 instead of just 850. We'll use the last four digits after the 1 for the value.

More examples:
If I think the price will be $1,345 I would send [masked] to 1M3gE8wfPrYr5EWSYahUbuh8fNjwb3z3Kg.

If I think the price will be $5,000 I would send [masked]

If I think the price will be $5 I would send [masked]

Again, send to 1M3gE8wfPrYr5EWSYahUbuh8fNjwb3z3Kg. You do not need to be present to win. The winnings will be sent to the address that was the closest. Please send from an address that you have control over (no shared wallets like Mt. Gox) or you may not receive the reward.

You can track the action here.

There was a question last night about some of the technical aspects of bitcoins and in particular the cryptographic signatures that are part of every transaction. This video is one on a whole series about bitcoin from Khan Academy. I would recommend watching the whole series, but this one may answer the question.

That is one truly fantastic video... it's concise, but gives you more than enough detail to get an excellent understanding. Many thanks!

Found this meetup JUST too late. I live in Pendleton and have been just getting into Bitcoin the last couple months. I ordered some mining equipment, and am excited to connect with other advocates of Bitcoin!

I tried to attach some pics to this thread, but for some reason am unable to. Anyway, here are some backup procedures. I'll try to make a couple of printouts and bring them with me as well, but they should be here for future reference.

A note to everyone showing up tonight. Ale Emporium (if you're not familiar with them) has two sides. If you are looking straight at it, the side on the right is the smaller of the two sides which feels more like a restaurant. The side on the left is where we'll be. If you don't see a pool table and shuffleboard, then you're on the wrong side.

For the new people who might not recognize us, I will try to have something on the table that identifies us. Also, I will be wearing a bitcoin shirt with a QR code on it.

Also, I'll try to post a hard copy on some backups steps for a few popular clients in about an hour or so.

    Thanks.

Hi guys! I have been accepting Bitcoin at our teashop (Beautiful Taiwan Tea Company) in Zionsville for a while now but recently started accepting it on our website. I'd like to get together with you guys and talk Bitcoin but weeknights aren't good for me as I work second shift. Maybe if you guys meet on a Sunday or something sometime I could join in. Cheers.

Sure, I'll try to schedule the next one on a Sunday. What all do you sell in your shop? I might try to make a trip out there this weekend to see a brick & mortar bitcoin transaction in action.

Thanks. That's great. You can check our site www.BeautifulTaiwanTea.com to see what we sell. Unfortunately, we're only open M-F so weekend visits are not an option right now. I just sold my first two Bitcoin sales today actually.

I set the location to The Ale Emporium off of Allisonville in Castleton. They have good beer, good wings, and plenty of seating. If there are any better suggestions, please let me know. Thanks.

Someone mentioned Claude and Annies in Fishers before. Anyone been there to know if the owners would be receptive?

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
