Indy WordLab - September: Jessica Dyer

Indy Wordlab is a monthly reading series/open writing workshop. A local writer reads their work, takes questions, and offers a writing experiment, Attendees take 30-40 minutes to write on the prompt, and then reconvene in small groups to share their work.

This month, Jessica Dyer leads WordLab. Dyer writes, lives and naps in Fishers, Ind. She holds degrees in journalism and poetry from Indiana State University and Columbia College Chicago. She's the author of the chapbook Uterus Poems out now from The New Megaphone Press and serves as an associate editor at The Arsenic Lobster Poetry Journal. You can find her poems in various places including Sugar Mule and Phantom Limb. She tumbls for you at

Jessica is insightful and funny, and her poems present a perspective of life different yet similar to my own. I enjoyed her work and will never forgive her for constraining my writing. ;)

Ever since a high school assignment requiring me to write three sonnets, I've hated externally-imposed constraints. They clip my literary wings. But life always finds a way, and so does creativity. I spent much of the time given for the prompt thinking, and came up with something altogether different than I would if I was freewriting. Good, bad, in between--I created something, and can reflect upon that to inform my writing in the future. Really, though, I don't hate what I wrote during the prompt, and the more I think about it, the more I like it. I even have some ideas for expansions--using one of the constraints in the prompts, ironically enough!

Nicely done, very challenging. The constraint of the writing prompt really challenged me, and I'm going to submit the piece to a Flash Fiction contest.

For the writing prompt, should I bring a laptop and pass that around, or a paper notebook, or will materials be provided?

Hi, Chris. A laptop is fine, as is paper and writing utensil of your choice.
