Indy WordLab Meetup - First Steps

At this month's WordLab, we will be taking a look at how the first sentence of a story (or the first line of a poem) can set the stage for the entire piece. Author Christopher Newgent, founder of Vouched Books, will be joining us for a reading from his latest chapbook ("The Fullness of Everything") and to guide us through our experiment in starting right.

Want to win free stuff? RSVP here on Meetup by Friday, May 4th, and you'll be entered to win a signed copy of "The Fullness of Everything" along with a $10 gift card to Vouched Books.

We had a great first meetup in April, and we're all looking forward to this next chance to get together and write. Spread the word! Bring your friends! Come ready to make awesome stuff happen!

Get involved! When you RSVP, you'll be given a chance to submit a really great sentence. Submit something original, and your sentence might be a part of our experiment!

For those who have shared comments and suggestions from the last meetup: THANKS A TON! Please, anyone who made it out, keep the notes coming so we can continue making this group better and better.

The meeting was great. The reader, Christopher Newgent, was excellent. This meeting was even better than the first, focusing more on the experiment than just talking. My only suggestion, I know that we're all writers at the meeting and so by nature we're usually bad at putting ourselves out there but it might make sense to invite some of us to share beyond just the smaller groups.

I loved this workshop as I did the first. My only suggestion: find a way to create a quiet space for each group to share our writing. I had a hard time hearing over the groups around us both times.

Interesting exercise with the focus upon first lines. I had expected something more pedestrian, such as how to craft better first lines, but giving us lines to choose from as a prompt was an effective alternative. Chris Newgent was a great guest speaker and group member as well!

Another creatively motivating evening! Really liked the Vonnegut points, too, very helpful.... thanks again! Look forward to June!

I enjoyed the shift from a lot of talking up front to more time for both writing and small group discussion. We had plenty of time in my group to discuss each person's writing fully, and it was awesome to hear about every writer's process.

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
