"Hands that help are far better than lips that pray."
The writing of Robert G. Ingersoll embodies the brilliance of William Shakespeare, the courage of Thomas Paine, the compassion of Charles Dickens and the warmth of Mark Twain. Ingersoll's work should be on the curriculum of every school in the land. It isn't because of his controversial view of religion. He abhorred the idea of a 'god' who enjoyed nothing more than torturing people with plagues, famines, droughts and wars, and he detested the concept of a 'saviour' who so hated the world that he condemned most of its population to an eternity spent writhing in the flames of hell.
This meetup group has been formed to disseminate the writings of Robert G. Ingersoll. You are invited to join regardless of whether you live in Sydney or elsewhere in the state, the country or the world.
"All that is necessary, as it seems to me, to convince any reasonable person that the Bible is simply and purely of human invention – of barbarian invention – is to read it. Read it as you would any other book; think of it as you would of any other; get the bandage of reverence from your eyes; drive from your heart the phantom of fear; push from the throne of your brain the cowled form of superstition – then read the Holy Bible, and you will be amazed that you ever, for one moment, supposed a being of infinite wisdom, goodness and purity, to be the author of such ignorance and of such atrocity."
Robert G. Ingersoll (1833-1889) Govenor of Illinois, author, orator
