Mariah has graciously offered to host us at her place and lead us on a beautiful 5 hour ride. It's varied terrain. Part of it is single track, but no cliffs ... some rocks, granite, then a fire road, and we lunch at an old mine in the hills (very cool), then we head out on fire road, hit a nice trail up the mountain and then down the mountain is technical. It's single track part of the way, can be steep in some places, and with some unlevel footing, but it's not for the faint of heart. I wouldn't put a beginner on this ride. Pack waters and lunch in your saddle bags we will eat on the ride. We will park at Mariah's pasture. Since this is a private residence its important we all are on time.

Glad you all had a great time. We had a house for a few years less than a mile from McCalls. The neighbors spoke often about Cougars in the area. Several had them around their houses. We never saw one but we saw plenty of signs. Yet- no one ever had an attack on their horses. Chickens yes, but horses no.

I did have a mountain lion encounter at McCall's while camping there on Friday night (frightened horses, cougar eye reflection, growling) which lasted about 30 minutes about 4:30 am. Once horses were moved to stalls away from the trees and brush, all was well. There are many stalls in open areas, which I'd choose next time.

wow I have never had that experience at McCalls but not surprised since their food (deer) would wander thru the park at night drinking from the horse troughs.

This was fabulous. Probably the most challenging ride I have been on (steep), but I trusted my sure-footed horse, and enjoyed it immensely. Mariah is a very fine leader, and took good care of us the whole time. Very beautiful area (gets hot). My barefoot horse absolutely needed front boots, or he never could have done it. No need for rear boots. I'd like to go again when it's cooler.

Just did the ride today and it's about 3.5 to 4 hours in the saddle. We'll have lunch at the gold mine about 2 hours in.

Hi Mariah, It was so great to meet and ride with you in Fallbrook. I love the sound of this ride and 5 hours..yes! We love rides of this nature. I would love to go, however, Saturdays are not available for me to ride. Please keep me in mind for your next ride and hopefully it will be on a Sunday!

I have been looking forward to a Garner Valley ride and had every intention of joining it. But sadly I will be out of town that weekend.
Its one of the most beautiful places to ride. Have a great time.

This looks great....is it really hot there? Will my horse need boots (small sharp rocks or gravel)? I like the idea of camping the night before at McCalls.

It gets to be in the 80's. Look up Mountain Center, CA for weather report. Granite, some shale, but nothing really sharp ... ;). Mccall's is close by ...
