Aboriginal Skills Walkabout Class
"Stealth and Harmony in the Wild"
with Jim Robertson
Sunday, March 17th
Starting at 9:30am (with option to camp out)
Santa Monica Mountains - Chatsworth Area
You your family and friends are invited to join me, naturalist and Aboriginal Skills instructor Jim Robertson for an all day outing in the beautiful Santa Monica Mountains in the vicinity of Chatsworth. THIS CLASS WILL OFFER THE OPTION/OPPORTUNITY TO CAMP OUT!
Part of the focus of this outing will be on how to be stealthy and harmonious in the wild. We will explore a magnificent large cave and make a Dakota Oven in the ground to cook some wild greens which we will harvest. The oven will be lit the “old way” using Aboriginal Skills, hand drill and/or bow drill methods.
Plant identification for food, medicine and utilitarian uses will be discussed along with harvesting with integrity and mindful awareness. Plant communication and ecology of the area will also be discussed. A “primitive” shelter will be viewed and shelter building discussed.
At Approximately 5PM we will leave this area and drive 3 miles to a field that has great abundance of luscious wild greens which we will harvest to make a large wild salad at the nearby home of participant Dina Fisher. Dina graciously offered to stay at home all day preparing a wild food dinner for all of us to enjoy! If a couple of you are interested in joining Dina with the food preparation and learning some food prep skills and recipes from Dina…please let us know.
We will have a small fire in Dina’s back yard where you may continue to practice your hand drill and bow drill fire making skills if you wish. After enjoying all of this … some of us adventurous ones (perhaps you?) will re-immerse ourselves back into the beautiful wild for a “stealthy” campout and exploration the next morning.
Remember, all of these skills are pathways to a deeper relationship/connection with our natural environment and ourselves.
Feel free to participate fully, partially, or simply enjoy the camaraderie of other nature lovers and observe the happenings.
INCLEMENT WEATHER NEVER CANCELS, IT IS AN IMPORTANT PART OF OUR PRACTICE, LEARNING AND ENJOYMENT! SORRY, NO DOGS.
