There was a ton of great information shared. I definitely have a lot to learn about UX. The only downside I noticed was a pretty large bias towards large scale UX efforts. As a freelancer who's often the Design team, Marketing Team, UX consultant and Project Manager at the same time, I can't imagine convincing my small to medium sized clients to pay for that extent of UX r&d. I understand the importance of UX and user-centered design principles, and it's always something I strive to include as I can, but I would definitely be interested talking about smaller scale approaches... UX-light, if you will.

This is a great idea, I think it would be very useful for those of us dealing with smaller budgets. Thanks for the book suggestions as well!

Thank you indeed for the good feedback. As we've been evangelizing the idea that 'the user is the boss', it looks as though we will be organizing a UX 101-Part 2 - UX Processes for Smaller Budgets meet up. Hey Tim and everyone here, we hope you would like to be a part of the process.

Hi all, there were some people interested in joining the Global Service Design Jam -Vancouver. The Vancouver Service Design Jam takes place March 7th weekend. Participants in the event will have less than 48 hours to develop and prototype completely new services inspired by a shared theme.

For those who would like to get involved here is the official link for the Vancouver Jam:

Please email Adam Lawrence at [masked] to get connected with Christine Blair (the main organizer for the Vancouver Jam) and also to get added to the project Basecamp.

I'm helping out with the organizing but so far we're only a committee of two. This year's jam will probably be a small event to help pull in people who might be excited about organizing larger future jams.

Will anyone be speaking on research? Seems that's probably the most important aspect of what UXers do. Is that what's meant by 'defining UX'?

Good point, Lynne. Research is the foundation of all things UX, but I'm just touching briefly on it as I only have 15-20 minutes to define UX. We'll be using the ensuing discussions to shape future meetups based on member's interests. Feel free to attend and add your input, or better yet... It would be an honour to have you come present at a future session!
