wThis Week - Barry Pier
Mr. Pier holds an MSIE (MBA core, program management specialty) from the University of Houston and a BSCE from the University of Texas at Austin. Barry has over thirty years of progressively responsible positions managing organizations and projects in the wireless (Cellular, PCS, Mobile Data, Fixed Wireless), Internet, VoIP and other high-tech industries including seven joint-ventures/start-ups and six years overseas assignments. Barry has held executive and management positions responsible for strategic planning, funding and financial results, business and product planning and development, marketing and sales, program engineering, infrastructure implementation and network operations.
As Founder/CEO/Chairman of Wisper Telecommunications, Inc. (d/b/a WisperTeltm), Barry conceived the facilities-based Wireless Internet Service Provider (WISP) which was the first to provide broadband Internet access to mountain bedroom communities west of Denver. WisperTel was incorporated late 2001, cutover its beta trial network early 2002 and launched first commercial service mid-2002. Barry raised over $4.3MM seed capital, “sweat equity”, angel financing, mezzanine debt and private equity. WisperTel was the first WISP to offer fixed VoIP phone service in mid-2004 and was EBITDA positive in late 2004. The company acquired six other contiguous WISPs and became the 7th largest domestic WISP. When sold to JAB Wireless in late 2008,WisperTel covered more than 3,000 square miles, serve over 4,500 subscribers, generated $3MM in annual revenue, and the sale returned 350% to its initial investors.
Since WisperTel Barry has been the principal of Pier-2-Peer Enterprises, Inc. (d/b/a P2P), offering consultative services to high tech, high growth, early stage and turnaround businesses.
