Gopher Angels Network: How to get your start-up capital

  • Jan 9, 2014 · 6:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

David Russick, a successful entrepreneur ("Tubs" mini-dumpsters and recycling businesses) and founder of the Gopher Angel Network, will share how entrepreneurs can succeed in getting early-stage investors. The Network is looking for quality investment opportunities with upside potential and has reached out to the Innovators & Entrepreneurs Meetup community to build its deal-flow.

Gopher Angels is a group of accredited investors who are passionate about creating businesses in Minnesota. GA looks for outstanding entrepreneurs who can turn their vision into a successful business. In addition to finanical support, GA members will provide you with strategic guidance, valuable connections, and business support to take your company to the next level.

It’s important for both the investor and the entrepreneur to find the right partner. We want to hear from all passionate entrepreneurs, but we won’t always be the right fit. Gopher Angels is industry-agnostic.

Here is a guide to what makes a “good fit” for our members:

  • Minnesota-based, eligible for MN Angel Tax Credit
    preferred but not required.
  • Raising $50,000 – $1,000,000. For companies raising
more than $1,000,000, GA prefers you obtain a lead
investor before applying to Gopher Angels.
  • Demonstrated market validation (beyond a plan): working
prototype, beta testing and/or revenue generating model.
  • Passionate team with “skin in the game.”

Angels is a network of accredited investors seeking to invest capital and expertise in early stage Minnesota businesses. Our members make individual investments; this is not a fund.

Gopher Angels members are experienced entrepreneurs, business leaders, and investors who have helped build successful ventures.  GA members have diverse industry and business expertise, resulting in a well-rounded and networked group of experience and talent.

Angel investing is high risk. We seek to create an environment for more positive results for the investor and the entrepreneur. Collaboration on screening, due diligence, deal negotiation, and investment results in greater economic influence. Entrepreneurs gain more meaningful financial investments and value-added angel participation in building their business.

nvestment Profile:

  • Promising Minnesota businesses requiring up
to $1,000,000 to grow to the next funding stage.
  • Industry focus will be determined by strengths
    and interest of members.

The Organization:

  • GA is a member managed organization and works through
the commitment of volunteer time from its members.
  • GA is a member of the Angel Capital Association.

About the Meetup

Meet other entrepreneurs and independent product developers.   Bring your questions and "group-source" the answers.  Hear from specialized experts willing to share their insights.  Get energized and stay motivated to pursue your goals.  Relax and have interesting conversations.  Participants have found clients and collaborators through this Meetup.

Software, electronics, life sciences, med tech, services, products, materials, designs--innovators of a wide variety of value propositions participate. Both for-profit and non-profit entrepreneurs participate.  Many are starting their second or third business.  A partner in McKinsey & Company (NYC) turned up one evening. We have enjoyed meeting people from China, Korea, Saudi Arabia, Italy, India, Bangladesh and other countries.  Many are newcomers to Minneapolis/St. Paul.  Multi-generational, our age range has been 20 to 70+.  Several investors make periodic visits for those of you looking for capital.

RSVPs on the Meetup website don't include participants from our hosts personal email list and LinkedIn groups.  Many regulars just show up.  We don't cancel a meeting due to low RSVPs on Meetup.  Our largest attendance was about 20 people, but I've enjoyed smaller groups where I get to hear more from each person.

Let the host know what kind of expert you would like to have at a future meeting and feel free to refer speakers.

Informative, open environment where we were encouraged to ask questions with knowledgeable real investors. I really appreciated the opportunity to share our elevator pitch before the open networking time because it helped identify who would be the best people to connect with. Great event!

Cant wait to attend. I believe this is Gopher Angels anniversary. Month? Can we celebrate it tonight?

The meeting room is full. People whose plans have changed have canceled their RSVPs and people on the waiting list were put on the attendee list.

You must register on the Innovator & Entrepreneur section of the Meetup webs tie to get a reservation. Other groups kindly promote our meetings but RSVPs have to be accounted for in one place--or management of the Meetup becomes a full time job for the host. As host I already have two jobs.

Watch as meetings are scheduled and an announcement is sent by email. It is a bit competitive now as our membership hit 830 and the number of seats in a most classrooms has not. I am seeking new locations. Stay tuned.

The RSVP window closed before I had the chance to register on this page. Could I still attend or is there limited space?

We don't have a CEO seeking capital scheduled to speak, but I'll keep my eyes open for one to give us their pitch. We have done that in the past.
