What is creativity, how can we think outside the box?

This location is shown only to members

In this informal discussion we will talk about each others opinion on creativity and what it takes to be creative. Being creative is probably one of the best tools that one can have to be successful in any profession; be it Art, Music, Engineering, Science or anything else, and the best way to be creative is to be able to think "Out side of the Box". In this discussion we will raise and talk about following points among others.
What is creativity?
What dose it takes to be creative?
What defines our Box (How do we define our Box)?
How can we think "Outside of the Box"?

NOTE: Please remember the following points for the discussion.

  • All the discussion topics are purely rhetorical and only meant for having an intellectual, meaningful, debatable, exciting and educational conversations. They are not meant to attack or criticize individual beliefs, culture, religion or political thinking.
  • Given the fact that occasionally a discussion could become argumentative, please have mutual respect for each other and individual viewpoints and restrain from any personal attacks.

Will try to be there, but did you see Stripes last night? Think he has the chicken flu or something. Either that or he ate those 3 boxes of cereal I accused you of polishing off (sorry!) and now does not feel well from over eating. Might have to bring him to the vet Friday. I wonder how many boxes of cereal a tiger can eat?! Anyway, I digress...will come to your meetup if your cat gets healthy before then...

I enjoyed being a part of this discussion. A couple things struck me that might be "food for thought" for future discussions. I think it's pretty human and natural for conversations to hit some intense notes sometimes and ideally I hope there will be tolerance for that among all.
I was struck by the continuous laughter that continued to erupt (maybe 5-6 times) amongst a few in reference to Nazi Germany. Would the same people be moved to laugh in regards to the Genocide in Darfur?

Great group of people with varied points of view. The discussion flowed all night long and went in some very interesting directions.

We really dug into the topic. Creativity had varied meaning for different individuals. To me creativity is to make a thing. Or to think a thing differently, in a new way, or to give something of yourself to a project, work of art or other. This is why we can recognize the painter or composer when we see or hear art or music. I don't think creativity can be taught in workshops, as is the trend today. Almost all children are highly creative. Almost all children lose some or all of it when they enter the hierarchical educational structures. This, in spite of the best intentions of the best teachers. Bernard Shaw said somethhing like: all children are a fresh experiment of the life force. Don't set yourself up as an example to them, but rather as a warning.
