Come join me listen to “Green-lighting Green Cars: The Future of the Automobile,” part of a series of free lectures hosted by Harvard Medical School. The lecturers belong to Science in the News, a public service organization at Harvard devoted to exploring the science behind media reports. These lectures aim to empower citizens to better distinguish scientific fact from pure speculation and be able to put the knowledge to use in their daily life.

I expect the lectures to be standing-room-only, so let’s plan to meet early. The lecture starts at 7PM, but since it gets so crowded, I will meet the group at 6PM in front of auditorium’s main doors. If we are able, we will head inside by 6:15, so please be on time.

Afterward, we will head over to a local café to discuss the lecture for an hour or so. For those interested in taking the tour of the lab, please do so and join us after for discussion.

Both the event’s auditorium and our café will be within walking distance of the Longwood Medical Area stop on the E Line. Those who have a Harvard ID or pre-purchased M2 bus passes or will be able to come directly from Harvard and Central Squares.

For those who wish to drive, the website: “parking after hours in the vicinity of campus is not usually a problem; there are a number of parking garages along Longwood Avenue. In past years, the least expensive parking options were found in the MASCO parking garage near the Bruegger's Bagels and Temple Israel, about a 10 minute walk from the Medical School along Longwood Avenue. Handicapped and physically disabled parking is available at the medical school directly.”

More About Science in the News:
“Each fall, Science in the News hosts a free, 9-week evening seminar series for the public aimed at explaining and discussing today's hottest scientific topics without hype, exaggeration, or over-simplification.

The program is run entirely by graduate students from the Harvard community. Each seminar consists of three individual 30-45 minute interactive presentations on a single topic; an introduction to the background you need to understand the topic, a presentation about recent research or innovations, and a discussion of the ethical or societal ramifications of this research. Different graduate students present each section.

A major benefit of our seminar series is the accessibility of the speakers: we take as much time as needed to discuss and answer your questions! Often, the audience plays as large a role in the seminar as the speakers themselves.

We assume no prior scientific knowledge at our seminars, allowing us to attract a diverse audience from all walks of life.

Each lecture is followed by an optional tour of a Harvard research laboratory.

Free beverages and food are provided during the lectures through the generous support of local businesses and Harvard University!” (SITN website)
