Google is in the middle of a project to digitize the world's books to create a vast online library. The US justice department has urged a court in New York to reject the deal. The department said the agreement between Google, the Authors' Guild and a publishers' group raised copyright and anti-trust issues and should not go ahead in its current form. Other authors and internet companies have objected to the agreement but Google says the deal would give readers unprecedented access to books that have been out of print for years.
If permission is given to go ahead, Google will be able to digitize old and new books without fear of prosecution for copyright infringement. In return Google would create a Book Rights Registry where authors and publishers could register works and be compensated.
