Civil Rights Activist Gives the Disadvantaged an Edge through Algebra

at the Collins Cinema, Wellesley College campus

As a key leader in the civil rights movement of the early 1960s, Robert Moses focused on registering southern sharecroppers to vote. Today, he aims to assure the right to learn algebra - arguing that mathematics literacy in today's information age is as important to citizenship as registering to vote in 1960s Mississippi.

Moses will talk about the need for high quality mathematics education during a lecture, "The Right to Learn: The Long Campaign for Civil Rights and Education Equity", Tuesday, March 16, at 4:30 pm in Collins Cinema on the Wellesley College campus. The event is free and open to the public.

The Algebra Project is a national U.S. mathematics literacy effort aimed at helping low-income students and students of color successfully achieve mathematical skills that are a prerequisite for a college preparatory mathematics sequence in high school. Partially, the Project's mission is to ensure "full citizenship in today's technological society." Founded by Civil Rights activist and Math educator Robert Parris Moses in the 1980s, the Algebra Project has developed curricular materials, trained teachers and teacher-trainers, and provided ongoing professional development support and community involvement activities to schools seeking to achieve a systemic change in mathematics education.

The Algebra Project reaches approximately 10,000 students and approximately 300 teachers per year in 28 local sites across 10 states. [From Wikipedia]
