Existence of Mind

  • Needs a date

  • Needs a location

  • Does mind have a physical existence? Does mind exist. (Please note, mind is different than Brain). In fact, is brain all we got. Our decision predetermined by the neural network of our brain (wiring of the brain). Broader question: is there truly a free will?

I would strongly prefer that we avoid crowded venues that are pricey and too noisy to conduct a quiet, meaningful discussion. The most important consideration is for attendees to be able to easily see, hear, mingle, and chat with one another. Quiet venues with tables in the round (not lots of rectangular tables stacked end to end) are best for this purpose. An important 2nd consideration is that the venue be conveniently located so that everyone can reach it via train, bus, and CAR. For the latter, parking needs to be ample, as well as either FREE or inexpensive. Ex-Urban locations away from busy cities work best.

    very good question.

It's Wed 9/23/15, and this MeetUp event has been tentatively scheduled for several months now. Is our Head Organizer (Jim B) or any of our 8 other Assistant Organizers going to step up to the plate and exercise his/her FREE WILL by scheduling a definite day/time? If not, does that mean that there's no such thing as FREE WILL?

  • Jeff M.

what in the world are you talking about?

The western enlightenment was ... is ... all about free will.

    (1) "Does mind have a physical existence?" No ... (you already answered your own question - the brain does; the mind doesn't) ~ ~ ~ (2) "... is brain all we got." (sic) ... apparently not ~ ~ ~ ... and (3) "is there truly a free will?" Absolutely! ... (I'm out.) ... :)

What evidence do you have for free will?

      September 23

    • Steve Gluck § (.

Too late ... I'm already out ... which is, of course, all the evidence you need, or, in other words, the idea that free will does not exist is simply an excuse to fall in line, which, of course, goes against the preponderance of evidence as presented by western enlightenment philosophers regarding human-rights, social-justice and so on, so take it up with them, or, in other words, don't waste my time. I've got better things to do ... (which y'all would also have if you could ever break free from the shackles of naturalism).

..a million dollar question. It's been asked countless times. No neuroscientist, philosopher, psychoanalyst, artificial intelligence geek, nor science of mind expert has been able to offer a meaningful answer this question. Few have even attempted. You will not find it in any book ever written.
Is it possible for the mind to understand and describe itself--its inner-workings? What are the technical specifications for a mind? Is the mind an emergent property of a complex brain? How did it evolve over time and at what point in our evolution did we develop one? Do other animals have one? I could go on...
