In Search Of Adolf Hitler

If you are unable to attend, please change your RSVP PRIOR  to the day of the event. Cancellations after 12pm, April 18th will constitute a "no show." A "no show" may impede your ability to attend future Inquisitive Minds events.

Adolf Hitler is one of the most unknown, “well known” people in history.

Yet, as the chief catalyst of the defining event (WWII) in perhaps the defining century in human history, you could make a case that he’s one of the most influential people who ever lived.

Such a person deserves critical analysis, but the treatment of Hitler in popular culture is most often cartoonish and dismissive, leaving us with little or no understanding on how his phenomenon was actually able to seduce so many normal people, and have such tremendous impact on the world.

So let us discuss what we can learn from him.  For as the saying goes, those who don’t learn from history are doomed to repeat it, and humanity constantly finds itself repeating Hitler’s lessons, even though we tell ourselves we’ve already learned them.

This may be a controversial topic.  But 2014 marks 75 years since the start of WWII in Europe, 100 years since the start of WWI, and 125 years since Hitler’s birth.

In other words--if not now, when?

We look forward to a meaningful, stimulating discussion...E

I feel we had an open, candid discussion, with both room for sharing each other's perspectives and learning from them.

Agree. Unfortunately, I could not hear it very well.

Nothing like a spirited debate on mankind's capacity for evil-doing on Good Friday!

How does the waiting list work for this group? Are we automatically registered? I missed another group's event registration because it went to another (less used) account. Please advise!

Hi Aimee, yes, if a spot opens up, you'll be automatically updated to "yes". You're pretty high on the waitlist and there's always last min cancels so I'd plan to come.

Hello, Jill. Thanks for your response. It's super helpful. :) All of my (multitudes of meet up emails) notifications go into an account that I don't read regularly. It seems like your group is fairly serious about no-shows. I'm going to make myself a no at this juncture as I get too busy at work to check the account hourly. Let me know if you revisit this topic. I had started to revisit Arendt in preparation.

It's important to remember the people *elected* Hitler.

If my memory serves correctly, initially he was appointed as Chancellor by the elected president, Hindenberg, in 1933. Later that year Hitler pushed in the Reichstag (German Parliament)the "Enabling Act" which gave him temporary power. In 1934, when Hindenberg died in office, Hitler gained full power.

Yes, I think that's just how it happened. To quote Pulp Fiction's Jules, "Look at the big brain on Deborah!" :) Feel free to cohost the meetup. Just kidding; my mouth is too big...

I wish I could attend, but I am out of town for Easter. I'd like to see this topic reposted for another event. I have studied WWII quite a bit, and although not Jewish try to learn as much as I can about Holocaust victims, survivors, stories. It was a tragic time in history and we should "Never Forget."

Please keep in mind that not all topics fit the group's charter. Suggestions for events are welcome.
Proposals are subject to approval by one of the group's organizers. Thanks!

Just wanted to clarify Elliot and Jim's comments: suggestions for events are always welcome. However, it is extremely rare that we designate folks as an event host.

This is the first time I was sent an invitation to this
particular topic. I did join the wait list, but I would like to know why I did not receive the initial announcement. Again.

Hi Barbara, I've no idea why you didn't receive it. I think you should have, if you're on the mailing list. If this is a consistent issue you may wanna contact Meetup. Good Luck.
