Investigate the Open Source Skunkworks
The Open Source Skunkworks a show case for healthcare IT innovation. It is a bazaar for all healthcare SMEs whose business models stand on the shoulders of open source giants, such as Java, PHP, Drupal, Liferay, Yii, Elgg, Linux and especially Darwin and IOS (Apple).
Its core objective is:” to put clinicians directly in touch with software developers, to reinvigorate a new awareness and dialogue around IT to share awareness of fresh challenges, and stimulate new ideas and new solutions”.
To support this, the stand offers three types of activity:
1) An array of continuous demonstrations of open source platforms and solutions from the leading open source SMEs and public sector projects in UK Healthcare.
2) A published schedule of talks and debates will be delivered in the street theatre area of the stand, facilitated by Malcolm Newbury.
3) An impressive array of volunteer skill-guides will be on hand to answer questions from delegates in scheduled half hour slots. These are the technologies used by developers to build build product as well as hackdays to establish proofs of concept.
This is the second year of the Skunkworks. 2012 has been a big year for Open Source. Last year, people were impressed that EHI had shone a light on the open source sector. After a year of high profile “hackdays” , open source appears to now be a regular feature of the Health IT landscape.
