Building our first Camp Cottage

  • September 11, 2013 · 12:00 AM

Join us for several days - or come out to visit for a few hours to see what we're doing!  We're building an earthbag cottage with a living roof.  The exact design is flexible - so part of the fun will be collaborating on the details as we work.  Bring water and food to share.  This Meetup is as much about building intentional community as it is about building a cottage.

See the photos section to see how much we've accomplished so far.

Other projects you may choose to help with:

- Clearing the road and filling holes with gravel.

- The hugelkultur (mound garden).

- Cutting, splitting, and storing firewood.

- Improving the placement and effectiveness of rainbarrels (we have quite a few).

- Organizing the kitchen area.

- Setting up a shower/bath area.

- Soaking up sunlight, restoring one another's souls, inspiring others to participate in the creation of a more beautiful world.

Please bring food to share and water.

Thank you Fiona for your generosity and hospitality, and Duncan, Rabbit and Loki for your company. And I appreciate you, brothers Don and Joe, for those truly stimulating/enlightening conversations. Hope to see more of y'all.

Sage, I'm still chewing on our conversation - especially what you said about the critical importance of awareness. In fact, I just wrote a few comments (under your inspiration) with quotes from Paulo Freire on my FB page - with this comment added: "What the world needs, it seems, are more wild people -- people who refuse to be domesticated and tamed. The wild deer depends, for its survival, upon its awareness; the placid cow waits to be slaughtered." I also agree with you, that the accumulation of possessions dulls our awareness and our ability to make choices and be involved in the 'Now'.

Likewise Don, I be chewing on your words "exchange economy" vs "gift economy." For sure, it's a profound paradigm shift and has implications far beyond economy and money. Community begins (and ends) in one's own mind. Ha ha, who know? And I like with your FB comment, ye wild man :)

Several were only able to come out for part of the time, but everybody contributed in most excellent ways. Unfortunately, family duties came up that required me to leave Saturday rather than Sunday.

Thank you Fiona. It has been a fun and fulfilling project so far. It will be a very good, very solid cottage. Don has been amazing in all his efforts with this project. It has been a great experience working with others and making meaningful friendships along the way.

I will not be able to be there on Wednesday. My granddaughter is ill and I will be caring for her. I should be able to arrive early on Thursday and work for two or three days.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
