Assertiveness plays a key role in all of our professional lives, whether it is in a large company, a small/medium size business or your own business. And yet, for most people knowing how and when to utilise it can be extremely challenging.
How often have you come away from a discussion with a difficult client/ customer and wished you had handled it with greater assertiveness and less emotion. How often have you wanted to make a point at a meeting, be clear and assertive with your colleague/staff or stand up to your boss on issues you strongly disagreed with but found yourself keeping quiet and adopting a passive role to keep a peaceful relationship and not rock any boats!
People, habitually, tend to opt for one of two broad positions: either withdrawing from what they perceive as potential conflict or adopting a confrontational style that can appear antagonistic and overbearing.
Women often resort to being passive when faced with aggressive or strong personalities and often mistake assertion for aggression. Assertiveness is about being able to communicate your needs, opinions and desires in a way that is respectful of others as well as yourself.
