Memorial Day Weekend International Potluck Dinner

  • May 25, 2014 · 6:30 PM
  • Private Home

Most of us don't have to work on Memorial Day.  Many of us already have activities planned for that Saturday.  So why don't we get together for a potluck dinner on Sunday, May 25th?  If this sounds good to you, and if you don't mind driving to Chula Vista, then I'd love to invite you to my home for some good food, socializing and conversation.

Since this  will be a potluck dinner, the only rule is to bring a dish, preferably from your culture or country of origin.  You can bring drinks, too, of course.  I will make Filipino fried rice and some kind of chicken [probably fried chicken because we Filipinos are so health conscious :-)].  The rest of the food and drinks are up to you!  There are people from all over the world in our group, so this will truly be an international potluck!  Don't miss it!

Please feel free to email me if you have any questions about this event.  I look forward to seeing you at my home for fellowship and a delicious international dinner!

Way to put some "mayonnaise" on it.

I must say, this was a fun potluck event. I've never had so many international food items in one potluck event before. Thank you very much for organizing and hosting this event, Wilfredo. Both Tess and you were such great hosts! It was nice meeting new people and good seeing others from the past events.

    • Wilfredo P.

I agree, Kamlesh. I've been to many potluck dinners, but never attended one with such a variety of dishes from all over the world. I appreciated that everyone made the effort to actually make a dish, not just bring chips and dips! Your chicken tikka masala was superb! I can't believe it's the first time you made it! The dish tasted as if it was made by a professional Indian chef! Tess agreed--she loved it and left hardly any for me!

    Tess and Wilfredo,
Thank you so much for hosting this event. I came all the way from Oceanside but it was definitely worth it. Wonderful people, beautiful environment fantastic hosts, good weather... aren't we spoiled?

    May 27

    • Wilfredo P.

I appreciate you making that long drive from Oceanside, Nick. It was nice to meet you. Next time, bring some goulash, please. Two people from Hungary at the party and no goulash? What's up with that? :-)

Wilfredo, Tess - thank you so much for having us all in your lovely home. What an awesome event - it was fun seeing some familiar faces and making new friends... the conversations were great and the food was incredible!! We must do this again!

    • Wilfredo P.

I totally agree, Cristy! By the way, that Mexican custard dessert you made was terrific! Check out the picture I took of it. It tasted as good as it looked!

Thanks to everyone who attended. It was so much FUN! The food and the company were terrific! It was great to see friends from the group and to make new ones! My wife enjoyed herself immensely as well and may have found some new travel partners! We had a true international buffet, which included amazing dishes such as Russian caviar, Spanish tortilla, Filipino fried rice, Colombian arroz con pollo...and even good ole 'Murikan KFC. The desserts were delicious as well! Thanks to Rowena for bringing the delicious coffee. And thanks again to all the attendees fro making this a successful event. It was worth all the cleaning I had to do per orders from my "boss." :-) We'll have to do this again!

Thanks for putting in the effort in making the "tortilla Espanola," Barbara. As I mentioned, it tasted just like the tortilla Espanola I've had in restaurants and bars in Spain. Now you know what to get as a great complement to your dish--the sweet sangria from Trader Joe's!

I studied Italian and French long time ago. I think I lost my French. When I traveled to Italy in 2012 everything came out and was able to communicate in Italian very well with no problems. I will try it...Probably I have to review my books before going to the meeting, hehehe :) I speak Spanish fluently.

      May 19, 2014

No adobo, Wilfredo? Ha-ha - j/k. I'm more of a baker, so will definitely bring a dessert but will also think of a Mexican dish as well. I look forward to the dinner!!

    1 · May 3, 2014

    • Wilfredo P.

Sounds awesome, Cristy! No adobo unless my wife gets motivated to make some because I can't make that dish, unfortunately. But we'll have different types of cuisine from all around the world, so it should be a delicious and memorable dinner.

      May 3, 2014

    • Kamlesh

Dang! I quit eating deserts a few months back.

      May 12, 2014

  • Lalitha P.

Hi Wilfredo, looking forward to hear about your experiences in India. I've travelled to different parts of the world, but I'm sure, you and your wife have visited far more countries than I have.

I used to be an avid fan of bollywood movies, but since I moved to this country, I gradually lost in Indian movies, though I've seen a few movies of Shahrukh Khan and Rhithik Roshan, and they both are my favorite actors.

Since I'm from southern part of India and a vegetarian, I'm planning to bring a south indian dish.

    May 6, 2014

    • Kamlesh

Lalitha, Welcome to the group! Wilfredo has more knowledge about Bollywood actresses than some of the Indians I've known in this country.

    May 5, 2014

Yes, I'm a big fan of hers, Kamlesh. Let's not forget that the word "fan" comes from "fanatic." :-) I think it's cool that Deepika was going to become a professional badminton player before she became an actress. I love badminton! Barbara, Carlos Ponce must not be aging well. He's only two years older than Hrithik!

      May 5, 2014

    • Kamlesh

Wilfredo, Her dad was a top badminton player of India. Good she didn't become a badminton player. He'd be so embarrassed lol

      May 6, 2014

  • Wilfredo P.

My wife and I will also bring a type of Filipino dessert best described as banana fritters. For people who are allergic to cats, I need to disclose that we have five cats. I hope allergy medication can help anyone who is allergic to cats and that our cats will not prevent you from attending.

above picture .....mon Dieu! food looks great!
I am a veggy person.....but hey, adventurous within that!

    :)

I know weird for a French to not eat meat but have not since I am 10 years old! Could not do it even if I wanted to now!

    May 4, 2014

    • Wilfredo P.

Hi Coco! My wife and I love French food. Her favorite thing to do in Paris is to have a baguette and just sit on a bench on The Avenue des Champs Elysees and people-watch. I didn't think that the words "French" and "vegetarian" were ever used in the same sentence. I just can't imagine tofu bourguignon or soy au vin. :-) At any rate, we should have some vegetarian dishes at the potluck, so you won't starve. Looking forward to meeting you.

    Hi!

would love to come....I am French, have another event that day but hope to bring crepes. If not, will grab some cheese and crackers perhaps? Got to have some fromage!

I LOVE tortillas Espanola, Barbara! Every time I go to a Spanish restaurant, I order that tapa. Well, I guess this means I'll have to get some sangria, too! Can't have Spanish food without Sangria, right?
