Iron Mountain Hike

Many of us will probably consume more calories than usual on the 4th of July. Let's burn off these calories with an early morning hike at Iron Mountain on July 5th!

We have to do this hike fairly early because of the mid-day heat and because it's such a popular hike on weekends.  The 100-space parking lot is often full by mid-morning.  We will meet at 8:00 a.m. in the parking lot.  We'll allow some time for latecomers and will start the hike promptly at 8:15 a.m.

The Iron Mountain hike is 6.4 miles total (3.2 miles to the summit and 3.2 miles back).  The elevation range is 1,611 feet at the start and 2,696 feet at the summit. On clear days, the hike features a beautiful 360 panoramic view from the ocean to the mountains.  It's one of the best views in San Diego County.  The trail is smoothly graded and has a steady elevation gain.  This hike is not easy, but it's not very difficult, either.  I would categorize it as average in difficulty.  When you do this hike, you will be rewarded with views such as this one:

Please bring plenty of water and snacks.  I recommend wearing a wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen and sunglasses.  The top hazards on this hike are the heat and rattlesnakes. Please keep your eyes open for rattlers and do not reach where you can't see.

Directions to the Trailhead

From Interstate 15, exit at Scripps Poway Parkway.  Follow Scripps Poway Parkway 9 miles east to its end at State Route 67.  Turn left on SR 67 and drive 2 miles north to the traffic light at Poway Road.  The 100-space Iron Mountain staging area and trailhead is on the right.  If the parking lot is full (highly unlikely at 8:00 a.m.), overflow parking is allowed along the SR 67 shoulder.

Optional Luncheon

For those interested, we will have lunch (or breakfast/brunch if you want) after the hike at The Beach Grass Cafe Poway, 12845 Poway Rd. (between Carriage Rd & Carriage Heights Way in Poway).  This restaurant has very good breakfast and lunch entrees at reasonable prices.  I've listed their Yelp page below.

Thanks to everyone who participated in this hike. It was fun! I hope you got a good workout and that you enjoyed the amazing views. The views from the summit were worth the hard work, right? We'll definitely do this hike again. I'll post some pics from the hike soon and all participatns are welcome to post their pictures as well.

It was good to meet you two on the hike. You both seem like enthusiastic and experienced hikers. I hope you can join us on future hikes.

Hi Darlandia. I'm sorry that you weren't able to find the group, but I'm glad you did the hike. It was a great workout, wasn't it? We'll do the Iron Mountain hike again, probably in the winter when it's not so hot. I hope to meet you at one of our events in the near future. By the way, for another dog-friendly hike, try the Sunset Trail at Mt. Laguna, the hike our group did last month.
