Hike the High Line, Governors Island, then East River Cruise

  • Aug 10, 2013 · 9:30 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Meet 9:40 AM at Penn Station, NY, by the NJ Transit waiting room.  Please contact the leader (Craig Nunn, [masked]) starting Sunday evening, August 4, for additional details.

From Penn Station, NY, walk the High Line then Hudson River Park to the Battery. Catch free ferry to Governor’s Island and circumnavigate the island. Then take the East River Ferry for a $4 (unless they raise the fare for 2013) cruise on the East River to Long Island City for optional barbeque and subways back to Penn Station. 8-12 essentially flat miles at a moderately brisk pace on city streets and trails. Awful or dangerous weather cancels. This is a strenuous hike.

Thanks for the comments - I had great fun leading this hike (et al.). Making slight corrections to my GPS tracks, I get the following distances: 7.8 miles in Manhattan, 2.9 miles on Governors Island (for those who followed my route), and 3.4 miles on the Williamsburg to L.I.C extension, for a total of about 14 miles. About 3 miles less excluding the Brooklyn/Queens bit.

Thanks Craig for a great hike. The biggest highlight of any of your hikes is your enthusiasm.

This was a really fine day! Fine leadership and great company! Weather was great, and where did all those people come from?
Park Avenue without traffic was awesome; great views and more people in Hudson River park; great seeing governors island and more people really enjoying themselves. Not a sour note to the whole day.

This hike will be a lot of fun and plenty of history provided by the visit to Governors island. Note meeting place and time will be posted 1 week before the hike starts.
