This is a repeat of a walk done towards the end of April. We are going to take advantage of the markers that Bruce put up for the first walk, before the trails change as they apparently can do in this working forest. It is also a good winter walking destination due to the sand (rather than mud!) base.
Woodhill Forest is a commercial Crown Forest and covers approx 12,500 hectares of land from Muriwai in the South to South Head in the North. The forest is a popular location for a number of recreation activities, including horse riding, 4WD and trail biking, mountain biking, walking, dog walking, orienteering and filming. Woodhill Forest is a sand based pine forest, providing all weather trails and recreation. The land is owned by the Crown but leased to a commercial operator (currently Hancock Forest Management Ltd). Different activities have been permitted in different areas of the Forest by the operators.
From Auckland City – At the end of the North-Western motorway continue north on State Highway 16 heading towards Helensville. Pass through Kumeu and Waimauku. The entrance to Woodhill Forest is clearly marked 6km from the Muriwai turnoff at Waimauku. Turn left into Restall Road. After 1.5 km turn right into Eastern Boundary Road and park at the picnic area on the right 1 km down Eastern Boundary Road. The track starts opposite the carpark.
We will do a loop walk which will take us through pine forest and native bush – it will take approximately 6 hours and is about 17km.
Meeting Point: Woodhill Forest carpark (Boundary Road) or carpool from Westgate Shopping Centre (departure at 9.00am)
Distance: Approximately 17 km (loop)
Duration: 6 hours depending on walking pace and duration of breaks
Difficulty: A relatively easy walk on a good track. Good walking fitness is required as we will walk at a reasonable pace.
What to wear and bring: Good walking shoes, water, snacks/lunch, warm jumper and wet weather gear
Group members have indicated that they like to walk in a smaller group with a preferred maximum of 25. Therefore the limit on our walks will remain at 25. Thank you for your understanding :-)
We will leave on time in fairness to the whole group.
