Woodhill Forest Walk (long version)

This is a repeat of a walk done towards the end of April. We are going to take advantage of the markers that Bruce put up for the first walk, before the trails change as they apparently can do in this working forest. It is also a good winter walking destination due to the sand (rather than mud!) base.

Woodhill Forest is a commercial Crown Forest and covers approx 12,500 hectares of land from Muriwai in the South to South Head in the North. The forest is a popular location for a number of recreation activities, including horse riding, 4WD and trail biking, mountain biking, walking, dog walking, orienteering and filming. Woodhill Forest is a sand based pine forest, providing all weather trails and recreation. The land is owned by the Crown but leased to a commercial operator (currently Hancock Forest Management Ltd). Different activities have been permitted in different areas of the Forest by the operators.

From Auckland City – At the end of the North-Western motorway continue north on State Highway 16 heading towards Helensville. Pass through Kumeu and Waimauku. The entrance to Woodhill Forest is clearly marked 6km from the Muriwai turnoff at Waimauku. Turn left into Restall Road. After 1.5 km turn right into Eastern Boundary Road and park at the picnic area on the right 1 km down Eastern Boundary Road. The track starts opposite the carpark.

We will do a loop walk which will take us through pine forest and native bush – it will take approximately 6 hours and is about 17km.

Meeting Point: Woodhill Forest carpark (Boundary Road) or carpool from Westgate Shopping Centre (departure at 9.00am)
Distance: Approximately 17 km (loop)
Duration: 6 hours depending on walking pace and duration of breaks
Difficulty: A relatively easy walk on a good track. Good walking fitness is required as we will walk at a reasonable pace.
What to wear and bring: Good walking shoes, water, snacks/lunch, warm jumper and wet weather gear

Group members have indicated that they like to walk in a smaller group with a preferred maximum of 25. Therefore the limit on our walks will remain at 25. Thank you for your understanding :-)

We will leave on time in fairness to the whole group.

Legs felt surprisingly good on Sunday. I think the soft sandy terrain causes less strain on the joints. and just the right amount of up and down for a good workout. Thanks Bruce, for the great organization and navigation.

Thanks Bruce for an awesome walk with some interesting comments as we passed through areas- loved going off the beaten track and walking with a great bunch of people. I really appreciate all the work the leaders put into our walks. Pools sounded great! Nice keeping fit and at a pace where we can still talk. Thanks again.

Wonderful day with a mix of walking, socialising and the relaxing hotpools. As Elizabeth and John already said, great leadership by Bruce and some excellent walking off the beaten tracks. Thank you Bruce for a very enjoyable walk, I also am feeling my muscles today!

  • Elizabeth

Great walk Bruce, thanks for leading it and navigating us through the forest. Quite different terrain out there and a real mix of bush, forest & beach. We had a few laughs along the way too, especially with those sticks disappearing and reappearing....great work by John! The hot pools afterwards were lovely and helped the muscles, although I can still feel them a little bit this morning so we must have had a good workout. :-)

Hi everyone; I have just had another look at the time that it takes to get to Woodhill from Westgate and 9 may be too early. I'll be there by 9.15 and will have two places in my car. If you are planning to carpool from there and see this message in time can you please let me know who you are so I know how many might be there. Thanks! :-)

Guess that means what I think it does. Never met Dave but visited his website enough over the years... Good guys never die - their website and stories live on. As he quoted: Put one in front,
      ...Then put the other.
      ...Same old way
      ...I learned from my mother

    Changes to Woodhill Forest Walk
    Saturday, August 17, 2013 - 10.00am

    Hi Fellow Intrepid Adventurers?

On this day we will only be doing the longer walk, which includes the Botanical Reserve and Pine forest
plus a 15 min walk along a west coast beach north of Muriwai - the degree of difficulty being similar to the 5 Volcanoes Walk recently completed by this group.
    This walk is approximately 6hrs - 17km
Bring sun hat and sun cream - you may need it, if it does not rain !!

The shorter walk I have re-scheduled for the 24th of August.

Please change your RSVP if this does not suit you.

Out of fairness to Clint I have closed the walk until Clint and his +1 have joined the walk. When only one spot becomes available others will 'jump' over the people who have a +1 attached to them. This is why Clint is still stuck on the waiting list while others who waitlisted after him are now attending. Please let us know on the board if you are interested to be on the waiting list and I will add you.

I am awaiting another date to schedule the shorter walk -
ie 4hrs 12km in the future.

We have decided that it is better to only walk as one group and not dilute our resources.

    August 12, 2013

  • Sandi

    Hi Bruce

Is it option 1 or option 2 you are doing on Sat.

    August 12, 2013

    • Bruce

Hi Sandi - We are doing option two on the 17th - ie 6hrs 17 km.

      August 12, 2013

  • Bruce

For those on the wait list or others wanting to do this walk again I am happy to do the walk again either with this meetup group or separately.

    August 9, 2013

    • Sue B

Might take you up on that idea if we don't get in, thanks Bruce. Maleen, if we if we come off the wait-list we can give you a ride from Waterview

      August 9, 2013

    • Sue B

Maleen we can pick you up in Waterview now we're officially listed if you're not already sorted, just let me know. We'd need to leave about 9:15.

Hi Bruce, I believe it is important that we choose either option 1 or option 2 as you are the only one who really knows the Woodhill Forest well in this group as far as I am aware. I have never been there before and would not lead a group if we would split up.

I also would only walk in this forest under your leadership as Woodhill Forrest is known to be quite tricky in regards to markers. I believe people need to know who leads option 1 or 2 before making an informed choice to do this walk.

    Option two please

    August 9, 2013

  • Bruce

    Option two - 6hrs - 17km

    August 9, 2013

  • Bruce

    Hi Fellow Intrepid Adventurers

On Sat 17th there may the possibility of two options

both include The Botanical Reserve and Pine forest.

    Option one - 4hrs - 12km

Option two - an extension to the first option includes the Botanical Reserve and Pine forest

plus a 15 min walk along a west coast beach north of Muriwai - the degree of difficulty being similar to the 5 Volcanoes Walk recently completed by this group.

If car pooling make sure you go with people who want to take the same option as you!

Don't forget a sun hat and sun cream !!!!!

    Cheers, B.

Hi Bruce, I go to the Bikepark Mountainbike place all the time, but I'm not familiar where the bbq area is on Eastern Boundary Rd. Is it before the bike park entrance? There is a sharp bend towards the right before you start going downhill towards the bikepark entrance. Is it somewhere on the hill. I know there is a track on the right with a gate, could that be it? With all the logging in the area, the paddock on the corner is now a bombsite....
