UBERFest: Arizona (for Grads of Technical Canyoneering Course & some leaders!)

  • Apr 10, 2014 · 12:00 PM

UBERFest:  Arizona

Who wants to go to Arizona for some real (wet) canyoneering?!

There is no fee for this trip! (except a $10/person non-refundable camping charge ... which must be paid in cash, immediately following your signing-up by enclosing a note with your name(s) and $10/person in cash, in an envelope and sending it to: Uber Adventures, 427 S Serrano Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90020), however, it is only open to students who have graduated from Intrepid Adventure Sports or Uber Adventures 3 day Technical Canyoneering Courses ... and experienced canyoneers willing to lead rookies through some awesome/wet, yet friendly, canyons! (If you are signing-up and planning to 'do your own thing' .. PLEASE DON'T SIGN UP! This is a trip for people who want to meet, share and explore!)

In order to keep track of people signing-up, anyone from other meetup groups MUST also sign-up on Canyoneering California http://www.meetup.com/canyoneering/events/154362952/ to be confirmed 'attending'

Some of the logistics:

LEADERS & GUESTS: Any leaders approved by me, (and who actually lead canyons) will have their camping fee refunded, which means they will camp for FREE!  That's my tiny way of saying 'Thank You!' to those willing to share, explore and lead strangers and rookies!  I've reserved a campsite near Globe, AZ.  It will hold 100 people!  This campsite has water, fire rings, covered pavilion/picnic area, restrooms and showers!  This large group campsite is for everyone!

CARPOOL!  DO IT!  It's 7 hours away. Two people to a car would be reasonable when you consider camping gear, coolers, canyoneering gear and the fact that there will likely be car shuttles required for some of the canyons.

You're also responsible for your own travel, and your own meals ... except!...  we should absolutely DO A POTLUCK on Saturday evening ... picnic-type food! (pasta salad, hot sausages, potato salad, cole slaw, hot dogs, buns, chips, salsa, salads, brownies, beer, wine, jello ... I don't care, but contribute something!)

These are some of the canyons you should try to find beta for:  Barnhardt, Big Kahuna, Waterslides, Parker, The Jug of Salome Creek, ETC ETC ... and if the weather permits it, possibly Christopher Creek (which is a bit of a drive and a much colder/higher elevation, but pretty dang fun).  ALL of these canyons will require a wetsuit as the water will be frigid! (think melting snow runoff)  If you're going to rent one, get a 4/3 and wear a rain shell over the top to keep the wind from evaporative-cooling you.  (PLEASE DON'T POST YOUR PLANNED CANYONS ON HERE!).  We will have sign-up sheets at the group campsite.

DIRECTIONS TO THE CAMPSITE: The campsite is approximately 8.5 miles south of Theodore Roosevelt Dam.  From I-10, east of Phoenix, take State Hwy 87/Beeline Highway north for about 60 miles to its junction with State Hwy 188.  Turn right and follow State Hwy 188 for 33 miles to its junction with State Hwy 88.  CONTINUE ON HWY 188 for another 7.5 miles to Forest Road (FR) 84/Grapevine Group Site. Turn left onto FR84 for 2 miles to the site .. our Loop is called:  Cormorant.

P.S.  RSVP's are limited to +1 ... if your +1 hasn't taken the Intrepid Adventures Sports or Uber Adventures 3-day Technical Canyoneering Courses or doesn't haveSIGNIFICANT RELEVANT EXPERIENCE, they should not be attending.

More details will be posted below as they become available.
