IoT Midlands Meetup #6: Show and Tell

Speakers:

• Joe Fortey   - Openness in IoT platforms, applications and APIs.

• Xiao Ma, WMG   - The Hub-Of-All-Things research project: how SMEs can get involved in this IoT data privacy project.

• Richard Knowles, Coventry Makerspace - Why Makerspaces are important for IoT businesses, and why you should support them.

• Paul Sanders, Director of Caption Data Limited   - The m2m nervous system: building a GSM-based solution.

Speakers will start at 7.15pm and present for 15 mins with 5 mins Q&A session each. The closing summary will include information on any IoT funding opportunities that may be available, plus any collaboration requests from attendees.

We would also like to have 'tabletop' demonstrations of projects that people in the group are working on - if you are interested in demonstrating your project, please get in touch with Scott Crowther through this group.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a buzzword. Definitions as to what IoT actually is vary considerably, but its foundation could be considered to be connecting everyday physical ‘Things’ to the Internet. The data from Things can then be shared. Existing Things will need to be hooked up to the Internet. New Things will be required. New data clouds will proliferate. New services and business models can be formed.

Nobody quite knows where it will go but elements of this are already happening. You can monitor your home, your health and your pets today. Industry is tracking goods, vehicles and communities. More examples are here: http://postscapes.com/internet-of-things-examples/.

How do West Midlands Small and Medium sized businesses (SMEs) capitalise on this projected market explosion? Opportunities abound for existing companies to adapt their existing products to be ‘connected’, invent new products, or prepare to deliver services in a different way. Collaborations will be needed – no one company can do everything.

IIPSI will try to assist in this growth by hosting a quarterly West Midlands SME meetup on the subject. The aim is to build a community of likeminded organisations willing to collaborate and explore, and innovate with IoT products or application.

This event will be an informal ‘Show and Tell’ event, featuring short talks from those innovating within the ‘Internet of Things’. Come and meet, explore and be inspired.

The International Institute for Product and Service Innovation (IIPSI) is marked as Building Number 27 on the University of Warwick campus map found here: http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/about/visiting/maps/campusmap/.

Car Parks 15 and 8 are closest (Car Park 8 is FREE after 6pm. Car Park 15 is £1.50 for <4 hours, £3 for 4+ hours, CASH ONLY). Or there is a well serviced bus stop close by and bike racks attached to the building.

Hi guys, I really enjoyed the event last week. For those of you who I didn't speak to, I'm an MSc project management student at WMG, currently studying the use of project management tools and techniques in start-ups. I've developed a questionnaire for my dissertation and would greatly appreciate it if any entrepreneurs/or individuals working in a recently set up business (1-5 years old) could fill it in. It won't take too long. Here's the link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/...

    thanks!

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
