should get to know ... Jennifer Holm
Job description: For O32 Design Group, I do marketing and sales. With my business, Government Sales Consulting, I train businesses how to sell their products and services to the federal government market. JC Material Handling Co. is an industrial material handling product I have been selling to the military for the last three years.
I have worked with or in the following industries: computer
training and development, human resource management training, office furniture,
efficiency management analysis, advertising agencies, occupational safety,
material handling equipment and bio-based industrial supplies.
Why I do what I do: I've always liked taking the less traveled road. It's not just "thinking outside the box" - it's living outside the box. Federal government sales are very much relationship- and trust-oriented. I greatly value the relationships I've built during the years.
What I do
to get away from work: Spend time with my husband of 13 years and
our 11-year-old daughter. We know how to be silly, laugh and have a good time
How I give back to the community: I spend a lot of time meeting and working with other entrepreneurs and inventors in the Midwest.
Words to live by: "Don't take life too seriously because no one gets out alive." Treat people the way you want to be treated.
The best place in central Iowa to entertain clients or colleagues: Nick's. It just has the right atmosphere.
I would change about the Des Moines area: Create a large manmade
tourist attraction. St. Louis has the arch; San Antonio the Riverwalk;
Washington, D.C., has historical monuments; South Dakota has Mount Rushmore.
Also, I'd like to see Spanish and Mandarin Chinese languages in the elementary
schools to keep our children and our state competitive with the rest of the
What Iowa can do to attract more people like me: We nearly moved to the Washington, D.C., area last year. However, once you have children, you realize Iowa is actually a great place to be to raise a family. Great public schools, clean, and you can actually see sunrises and sunsets over the horizon.
mentors: My grandparents for their entrepreneurial spirit, wisdom and advice.
My dads for their wisdom, advice, ability to step back and view situations with
great perspective and ability to not let their feathers get ruffled by others.
My mom for her no-nonsense attitude, willingness to listen, supportive and
nurturing parenting abilities.
If I could do something else: Maybe searching for unique and marketable inventions and helping them get through market research and patent processes, help them find funding, develop a marketing plan, implement the marketing plan and enjoy being a part of the success.
If you want to contact me: Call me at (515) 205-4565.
