Get Religion Out Of Government

We are working on a three year plan to change political thought and talk in the country.  In conjunction with the Richard Dawkins Foundation we are creating strategic alliances with many NGO's in Iowa and nationally.  Starting with a potential(if we do our job well a reality) trip to Iowa by Richard Dawkins next April to begin our year of building a volunteer base. and culminating in 2015 sending volunteers to almost every campaign events( typically over 2000 over the year leading up to the caucus) by all the presidential candidates culminating in the caucus in January 2016. We will also have a presence at the State fair, county fairs, Republican star poll and all the parades.  This will be fun but will also change the discussion in the USA.  We need now those of you who want to work hard to make this a reality.

I'm going to try and do a conference call for this event. Toll charges may apply. This is an experiment so we'll see how this goes. I may try to do webcasting in the future but I'm not sure how good the broadband coverage is where we're meeting. Conference Details Scheduled Conference Date: Tuesday, July 30, 2013
Scheduled Start Time: 05:45 PM Central Daylight Time
Scheduled End Time: 08:40 PM Central Daylight Time
    Scheduled # of Participants: 25
    Type of Conference: Web-Scheduled Standard
    Dial-in Number:[masked] (East Coast)
    Participant Access Code:[masked]

Participants will be muted by default but can unmute/mute themselves by pressing *6 for questions or comments

Let's see how this goes. I'm hoping it works well so we can do this, or something similar in the future.

Signing off now, got some chores to do before bedtime. :-) Thanks for the conference call, the Dr's talk was interesting. I wish the first part had been as clear as his part was.

I'm going to try set up a conference call for our more distant friends. I'll post more information soon. I haven't tried doing this before so there may be some technical difficulties but I want to give it a try

Are you looking into sites like livestream? I know several people on deviantArt who use it to show off while drawing. You can stream audio as well so I imagine it wouldn't be a huge stretch to hook up a microphone to a laptop while showing a picture of the speaker on the screen.

I'm not going that far, I'm just going to use a standard conference call, less technical issues

I don't know for sure if I can make the revised schedule so I'm just going to say no for now and revise later if available.

Is there a way to get this set of meetings digitized? Either with digital ways for those of us not living in Des Moines to participate in the meetings, or notes/minutes posted/emailed out? I REALLY REALLY want to be involved in this. I live in NW Iowa. Near Sioux City. Surely there must be something I could be doing up here to help with the April visit by Dawkins. I'm not the only skeptic up here either, I'm willing to coordinate with the Sioux City Freethinker group, if y'all can figure out a way to include us.

I've been wondering about this myself. Are you thinking of something like a live webcast or at least a conference call?

Or would an audio recording that we share later be enough?

      July 22, 2013

    • Jennie E.

Well, live webcast would allow for quicker exchange of ideas and assistance. Especially if you're really working to get secular presence at all the county fairs, it would be easier to get regional groups on board to help cover the NW and NE so fewer Des Moines peeps have to drive 3+hours. That said, next April is a ways a way, 2016 is even further, if you want to start simple and just release audio recording and minutes for this year, I know I'll make the time to listen in.
Some live web meetings I've used - joinme is what I've been using lately. Webex used to be nice, but I haven't used it in awhile. Google has something called Meetup I think, I haven't used that one.

Can't make the changed meeting but want to be involved. Will be there for August.

Hi everybody. I just fixed a huge problem. This meetup was scheduled for the 4th Tuesday of each month but it should have been the LAST Tuesday of each month. In other words, THIS MEETING IS ON JULY 30, not this coming Tuesday, the 23rd. My apologies. I hope I get word out to everyone.

That's good. I have RAGBRAI this week!

Dennis J. Goldford is this month's speaker. He is a Professor of Politics at Drake University here in Des Moines and author of The Constitution of Religious Freedom: God, Politics, and the First Amendment.

See you all there. (Once again, we are meeting on July 30 NOT July 23. Sorry about the error.)

First meeting. Just looking forward to getting a feel for the group. I am a member of the ISU atheists and agnostic society so I'm getting a mid summer fix skeptics discussion
