Chimerica – at the Almeida Theatre

“Tiananmen Square, 1989. As tanks roll through Beijing and soldiers hammer on his hotel door, Joe – a young American photojournalist – captures a piece of history.

“New York, 2012. Joe is covering a presidential election, marred by debate over cheap labour and the outsourcing of American jobs to Chinese factories. When a cryptic message is left in a Beijing newspaper, Joe is driven to discover the truth behind the unknown hero he captured on film. Who was he? What happened to him? And could he still be alive?

“Writer Lucy Kirkwood NSFW (Royal Court), It Felt Empty When The Heart Went At First But It Is Alright Now (Clean Break at the Arcola) and director Lyndsey Turner Philadelphia, Here I Come! (Donmar Warehouse), Posh (Royal Court and West End) make their Almeida debuts with Chimerica, a provocative new play which examines the changing fortunes of two countries whose futures will come to define our own.” – from the Almeida website

★★★★★ “A triumph of storytelling” – Time Out

★★★★★ The Telegraph
★★★★★ Daily Express

For this event, members need to purchase their own tickets direct from the theatre. All advance tickets for the play have now been sold out; however the remaining tickets for our performance will be released by the Almeida at 11 a.m. on the day. Please see the Almeida website for details. You may wish to leave a note of the seat you purchase in the comments beneath the event.

The running time is approximately 3 hours and 5 minutes, including a 20 minute interval.

I would be grateful if all attendees would contribute £1 each on arrival, to help defray the approximately £100 that it costs per year to maintain a group on Meetup.

I am arranging dinner after the play at Le Mercury Deuxième, just around the corner from the theatre. Please let me know when you RSVP if you would like to join us. As ever, attendees will pay for their own individual food and drinks (we don’t split the bill equally). As dinner will be fairly late in the evening, please have a look at the menu before coming and decide on your order so that we can order shortly after we arrive.

Very good story with many layers. They should trim the first half, though. Great discussion afterwards in the restaurant!

Hi all, I am a bit confused as Natasha...I haven't booked a ticket as I thought the organiser normally books them. So it seems like I won't be able to join you...as Natasha, if someone gives up theirs, I'd be happy to take it, thanks

I've booked dinner at Le Mercury Deuxième for immediately after the play, for a party of 10, namely: me, Gabriela, Alicia, Clare Hillman, Hilary, Stephen, Kevin G, Michelle, Isa, and Millie C. As it's a fairly late dinner, would you please have a look at the menu before coming, so you're ready to order shortly after arriving. It's available on http://www.lemercury.co.uk/menu-deux.html.

Hi.Just booked a ticket. The dinner is described in the notes as being 'after the play.' If the play is over three hours long, perhaps it would be better to have it before the event?

    June 2, 2013

    • Jane

Yes it's a late dinner I'm afraid, but for Almeida events the alternative doesn't work for this group. We always have a big take-up: too big for a restaurant to turn around quick enough (between people finishing work and when the performance starts). Having dinner afterward allows for a good conversation about the play. And I always schedule Almeida events for Fridays so that most people can sleep in the next day. Also, if people prefer they can come to dinner just for a starter or dessert and slip away when it suits them. Hope you can join us.

I'm afraid I'm travelling and not able to book my own; Gabriela is booking it for me, but she may yet note it in these comments when she has a chance to do so.

Jane and I have seats D5 and D6 in the stalls. Please do book your own tickets, I am unable to organise a group booking, sorry.
